It could have been just their jokey, tongue in cheek style, but The Darkness's acceptance speech at The Brits, seemed to have an air of arrogance to it, which I've noticed with them on other occasions lately (think they've discovered that white powder Oasis did a few years back? ).

I think if they carry on like that, it might well give an excuse for the media to turn on them sooner or later, not to mention the general public may bore of their quirkiness and catsuits.

The second album needs to be up to scratch, or they could be zooming off as fast as they zoomed in.

Yep...I like The Darkness, but they are rippin' my knittin' right now with that attitude...doesn't mean I'll stop liking them, but I can see how it might start to put some people off.

Also, their arrogance certainly keeps them in the spotlight; it's something to talk about, isn't it? This thread is evidence of that

I don't bother with entertainment media.
I listen to the music and will judge when the 2nd album is out.

1st album was good but the Xmas single sucked big time .....

For me, Muse were by far the standout performers of the night.

There are only three of them in the band, yet they still had blasted out their tunes with more charisma than many of the performers last night (mentioning no names)

They have been bragging about how well their album is doing in America and slagging Oasis & Robbie for failing out there.

IMHO I don't think they will hit the big time out there either. I've tallked about the darkness on a few different boards with allot of US users and they have commented about one flaw. This unfortunately is Hawking's wailing as it comes off as too gay. It's just not a man grunt and that's what Americans are used too. They comment that the music is fine and appreciate the 70's/80's rock riffs but Justin's voice lets it down for them. I personally don't have a problem with it as i'm used to Queen but Middle America are a tough cookie to crack.

I think the second album will sell well but the critics will hate it.

There is only so far a parody can go before it starts to get irritating. THe Christmas single was trying way too hard and I can't help feeling that they will try to top the overblown pomp we have seen so far, at the expense of fopcusing on qulaity. If they do, they will fail.

The will also struggle to adopt a new direction because they have been marketed so well within their particular genre.

They had there moment a few months ago, Last night's success was just to pull that out. I think they still have a good bit of success left though.

The Christmas single probably was trying to hard, but it was a CHRISTMAS single, ie just a bit of fun, and a chance to do something Christmassy.

The second album will sell well simply based on the first one being successful. I think the problem with the Darkness is that they went quite quickly from not much, to huge, and that could be their downfall. If they'd continued a slow rise to fame, like they had initially then things might have been different.

One problem they could have is that they have become a fad among the pop crowd, which could prove to be their downfall in the end. Time will tell - fads come and go but rock will live forever. Who knows which one will win in the end?

They are the only group I have to turn off when they come on the radio. Justin's voice is like nails down a blackboard for me I'm afraid. Everyone talks about the quality of their songs but him singing them means I can't appreciate that.

They do seem a bit of a Spinal Tap ripoff, but I have only heard the singles.

Yeah, although I'm not denying they have a fanbase (I like some of their stuff myself), alot of the reason they have been so huge is their "Tabloid appeal", which is alot down to the high pitched singing and the catsuits. If the Tabloids bore of them, or decide to turn nasty on them, they might well be out of fashion as fast as they came into fashion. Plus alot of the music critics, who said they were a joke a year or two back will be after their revenge, no doubt.

Yup, all the above is very true.
Music journalists like to predict the "next big thing."
Occasionally they get it right but then move on.

I'm not sure The Darkness' true fan-base is large enough to guarantee continued success.

On first listening to Permission To Land - I must admit I too though the singer let the band down but grew, eventually, to accept the singing is part of The Darkness' overall groove.

Roll on album #2 .....
