Venison?? What does it taste like?
My OH has started training to be a chef at college.
Next week ,they'll be cooking venison and in preparation, he has bought some venison to make a venison ciabatta with parsnip crisps for later this evening for the X factor. The thing is, I've never ate it before! ![]() What does it taste like? What condiments go with it?? |

It's a strongish (but not massivley so) flavour being officially a game meat. The closest 'normal' relative is beef.
Redcurrant jelly would go - also basically anything you'd have with beef. But it's each to their own type situation. |

I would say something like beefy lamb
![]() It goes well with strong flavours. Alot of recipies use juniper and red wine, port or marsala. It can also handle oriental flavours and I often have it with fennel seeds, star anise, or usually just five spice powder. Braised red cabbage is a common accompaniment. I usually have it with sauteed/roast potatoes, asparagus or broccoli, glazed baby carrots and sometimes baby sweet corn. With that dish you can swap between venison and duck. |

![]() If you look at the animal in its live form, it is a cross of those animals. Odd how that happens. |

I am literally watering at the mouth
![]() That sounds gorgeous!! Also knock up a little sauce to go with it (red wine, port, stock etc) Another option is to use some Hoi Sin or Plum sauce to give it a further oriental kick. I know I shouldn't because it's lazy and expensive, but I sometimes buy those packs of veg with asparagus, baby corn and baby carrots. A nice selection for that type of meal and serves two nicely. |

When I eat it, there was a chocolaty flavour and I thought it had a liver texture. Enjoyed very much.

I was at a christening and the host served sliced venison on the buffet. I went back for some more (as you do
) and another guest was helping herself to more as well. I said "this is lovely isn't it, I've never had venison before". The other guest visibly blanched and said "venison, I thought it was beef". She then put back the slices she'd taken and said she felt ill! The best of it was she was quite happy to eat it when she thought it was beef ![]() So, to answer the OP, it tastes like beef but is leaner. |

I have a friend who is a butcher.
He offered me 8 legs of venison for £50. Is that two deer?

The reactions I get range from incredulity to disgust. And yet if they just tasted it they'd love it. |

Poor Bambi, My ex loved it. But if it moved, he'd eat it. A proper carnivore.

Murder
Orr delicious if you eat meat.![]() I do remember when I ate meat and my parents gave it to me, it was rather tasty, though was a bit sad when I heard what it was. I was 7. If I ate meat again (which I doubt) it would be something I'd eat again. For now though, back to the tempeh. |
