6 week old tv , light vertical lines on screen
I bought a Toshiba 32" LCD tv from argos on 30th June this year ...
http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/5294653/c_1/1|category_root|Home+entertainment+and+sat+nav|12108813/c_2/2|cat_12108813|Televisions|12108983/c_3/3|cat_12108983|32+inch+LCD+TVs|12108984.htm Recently I have noticed 3 or 4 vertical thick lines on the screen , they only really show up on certain colours , for example , when I watch football ... the lines do not stand out much but I can see them as the camera moves across the grass , its becoming a little irrtating for me. I dont really know about warranties or Guarantees so I would like advice on what to do. A few questions... Im not sure how long the warranty is for the tv , should I contact argos or Toshiba to ask if they know ? What cause's the line's ? Is this fixable ? Would warranty cover this ? I dont have the packaging anymore as I gutted out the house for the arrival of our new puppy .... I'd be really greatful for any help or advice on this as I'm not really sure what to do. Thanks for any comments!!! geo g EDIT: Just to add .... I have sky+ and a hdd/dvd recorder combo , these lines show up while viewing sky and dvd's also. , plus Ive tried 4 different scart sockets , but the lines still appear. The line's do not really stand out but I notice them a lot and find it bugging. Thanks again for any comments! |

Take it back to Argos, I'd imagine that they would give you a replacement with little hesitation.

My laptop was repaired and returned within four working days, and my three year old (well out of warranty) was exchanged for a brand new equivalent (of better spec) - they sent the new TV out with a special courier who took the new TV out of the box and put the old TV into the box and took it away. |

I don't think that will be an issue as the TV is faulty. I took my sister in law to Argos last week to return her faulty microwave oven, she didn't have the box or the manual, but they didn't care, they simply swapped it out for a brand new, boxed one.

This is something different (and extra) to your rights as a consumer. Somewhere in the blurb about 30 days it will say "Your statutory rights are not affected" or similar. The position is that you have at least 12 months warranty on a piece of electrical equipment. (Cue 4 million replies about 6 yr european warranty obligations blah blah blah). In this time the retailer is obliged to sort out any faults from the product being made incorrectly or breaking down. They aren't liable if you did something to break the telly, but I'm sure that isn't the case. Don't accept being fobbed off with "Here's Toshiba's phone number" It's the retailers responsibility to sort this out. OK, what can you reasonably expect?...Well they might agree to give you a new telly of the same model or an equivalent. They could offer to repair the TV. They may offer you a refund less an amount for wear and tear. Schlepping a TV back to a shop is a pain, so make life easy for yourself and call customer services first. Discuss the problem and see what they say. There may be an agreement with a service company that calls out to your home, you never know until you ask.

![]() True they are usually easier to fix but in this case it's a new TV anyway. |

Update: I called Argos yesterday , told customer service of the problem , as she was adding the details to her computer she said more than once , 'sorry my computer is really really slow today' , the comp eventually crashed and she advised me to contact Toshiba.
She tried in vain to find the telephone number for Toshiba , I checked the Toshiba website and found it there lol , so she asked me to contect them , I did , A helpfull guy took my details and told me that a courier will call this thursday to take the tv away to get repaired. So hopefully it will get fixed , or replaced. Thanks to everyone for your replies , I'll come back to let you know once the tv comes back to me. cheers geo g |

Hi , It's been a while since my last post .....
Just thought I'd let you guys know the situation as it stands .... Mon. 7th Sept: Called argos to let them know of the problem , was told thier computers were down and was asked to contact Toshiba directly , which I did. Thurs. 10th Sept: Toshiba collected the tv and returned it on Thurs. Sept 24th. Was told they couldnt find a fault. The faint lines were still on the screen. Asked for a repair again. Fri. 9th Oct : TV away for repair a second time , returned on Mon. 26th Oct ... No change with the tv , still faint lines on the screen. Wed 28th Oct: Called Toshiba to let them no the situation yet again... Was told that the repair team had not found a fault with the tv , The operator suggested there must be some sort of interference at my home , possibly electrical , he even suggested it could be the Television mast that covers my area ???? I am told there is no fault with the tv so "there's nothing we can do about it , the tv has no fault , we cannot offer a replacement or refund" I complained further and they say they will send an engineer to the house but if he cant see a problem with the tv then its my tough luck..... Wtf????? Is this right ??? What can I do ??? Any advice/help is MOST welcome!!!! |

Disconnect the aerial and play a DVD through the TV. If the lines are still there it is definately a fault with the set. If not it could be a local source causing interference.

Toshiba TV's have a reputation for getting vertical line's appearing after a period of time.
A few guys at work have had the same problem with Toshibas. |

I called Argos after sales department , on Monday 2 argos engineers turned up and within seconds they said that the lines were "screen backlight shadows" and suggested that they take the tv and replace the lcd panel .... the tv was returned today untouched. ![]() They were going to replace the lcd panel but Toshiba wouldnt allow it as Toshaiba said "TV working to manufactures spec. This is normal for lcd of this type to produce slight shading. NOT FAULTY" I am at a loss as what to do now.. Toshiba say these lines are normal and wont replace or refund .... Does anyone have any advice on what my next course of action should be ? |

So argos and Toshiba say nothing wrong,
Your only course of action is Small Claims Court but you will have to show to the court the problem with your TV, or have an independent TV engineer write a report that indicates a faulty LCD panel, Keep the bills as this will be added to your claim. |

From what you say Toshiba have admitted the set is sub-standard, and that 'they' consider it of suitable quality. Tell Argos that you don't consider it of sufficient quality, and that their own engineers agreed. BTW - I can't comment on Toshiba as we don't service them - but if it was a Sony I would have just replaced the panel under warranty, I don't need to clear it with Sony first. |

This EU directive http://www.waheedkhan.com/tt/2yearwarranty1.htm may help you. It says that a two year guarantee applies for the sale of all consumer goods everywhere in the EU. In some countries this may be more and some manufactures also chose to offer a longer warranty period. You are not required to prove the fault was not down to your actions and you must report it within two months of it happening. Keep trying, the more determination you show the more likely that they will honour their obligations. Try their legal department. Good luck.

Don't let Argos get you contacting Toshiba and doing all the work, your warranty is with Argos and they are responsible for sorting this out. Once you go direct to Toshiba and get them involved it's hard to then go back to Argos to complain/get replaced/repaired etc.
This is why most big stores love to direct you to the manufacturer direct... there are occasionas where it might be faster to get them involved but it is kind of letting the retailer shirk their consumer duties. |

Not strictly true Nigel; Did you hear about the recent case where a Guy had bought a TV from Tesco (Vestel or similar) & it went wrong after about 19 months, Guy new about this & demanded that Tesco give him a new one, Manager refused & almost had the guy ejected from the store by security. He then phoned his head office who confirmed it was fact & told him to replace. As they could not give an identical item he ended up with a Freeview set & the guy Aerial was not up to scratch so they ended up paying for that also plus if I remember correctly £80 in vouchers for inconvenience.
The Tesco affair was done under the long existing UK 6 year SOGA - and was replaced because Tesco offer no service or spares for their own brand TV. This means they are unable to offer a repair, and a swap for a new one is all they can do. Obviously they were under no obligation to pay for an aerial upgrade (and it's the first time I've seen that suggested), but if they did it was as an apology for the way they had treated him - and nothing to do with SOGA or warranty. |
