Using an iphone on Orange - any missing features?
Hi i have a contract with orange but it's not due to run out for another 11 months - ages off!!
Anyway, the handset I have is not that great so I want to get an iphone. You can't get these on orange so the plan is to get a pay as go one from O2 and unlock it. The handset is £538.30 and unlocking is whatever it is. If I can't get an O2 handset in their shops or on their website, the other option is to get a simfree version off Ebay. What I want to know is once i get the handset, either sim free or an ultimately unlocked one, and put the orange sim card in, will i still be able to go on the istore and download applications? And will any features not work as it won't be on 02? Thanks!!! |

Hi, all should work fine with the exception of visual voicemail which is an O2 network feature... You should still be able to access your Orange Answerphone via 123 as normal.
As long as you have an iTunes account you will be able to use the App Store too.. One thing to watch out for is how much data allowance Orange give you. O2's unlimited truly is unlimited but some other providers "unlimited" is only 50Mb etc... You could land yourself with a large bill for browsing if you don't check your tariff details first! |

I currently pay £30 a month and for that i get 600 mins anytime, free calls to my missus' orange phone, unlimited text and unlimited data.
However, when I asked Orange told me that the unlimited data is 500 mb a month. Is that alot of data? How many web pages is that? Or does it not work like that? |

I managed to pick up a second hand iPhone 3G (looks virtually brand new bar a few tiny scratches on the back) with apple care till june/july next year from the avf forums for a comfy 276, unlocked it when I got it and bunged my orange sim in was easy as pie, like you I have the 500mb data bundle.
you will need the following settings for the cellular data and mms: first go to settings --> general --> network --> cellular data network CELLUAR DATA APN: orangeinternet username: user Password: pass MMS APN: orangemms Username: Orange Password Multimeda MMSC: http://mms.orange.co.uk MMS Proxy: 192.168.224.10:8080 EDIT: oh and make sure data raoming in settings --> general --> network is set to off this will also save you some data usage |

Hi, Guys
I am interested to know how andybono1 unlocked the iphone? I have a UK, 02, 3G iphone, running 3.0.1, and would love to jailbreak and unlock to run on my Orange sim which has unlimited data. Was your iphone model and software set up identical to this? Did you use 'redsn0w' to jailbreak and unlock? If so, do you now get everything , ie, Orange 3g coverage and data download where available, full access to app store downloads, and no issues when you synch with itunes, etc.? IE, do you get everthing from Orange that you would get with your Orange sim in another phone, and do you get everything from the iphone that you would get with 02? And if you did use redsn0w, any hints or tips or warnings on using it? thanks, in anticipation (oh, and thanks for the Orange settings you posted, too!) |

Use RedSn0w to jailbreak, & UltraSn0w to unlock.

Thanks, Matt D for those links, which are a great help in the jailbreak / unlock operation. It's actually not so much HOW to do the process, rather more, what are the potential effects? As detailed in my first post. For instance, I know someone who had his iphone unlocked, using another method, and whilst his Orange Sim worked for calls, he could not use the internet, and had no 3G signal. Then I read so many review posts by people who have failed at some point during the redsn0w process and then been unable to reboot, or had crashes. Other calls for help from failed unlocks.
That is why I am keen to hear from andybono1, in the hope that he has exactly the same iphone model and softwareas me, as well as being on the same Orange sim as me. One other point too. How come I see an awful lot of people saying they have 'accidentally' upgraded to 3.1 ? How does one avoid that happening exactly? If this happens, I understand that one is effectively locked out of being able to jailbreak / unlock again. (I am presently on itunes 8, and being asked to upgrade to ver.9) And more to the point, if that happens, is my iphone then a useless brick, or is it simply restored to its original 02-only, but perfectly working state? So many questions, but I'm worried about knackering my favourite gadget ever! If Apple would just allow sales by other providers, namely Orange for me, (as is rumoured), then I wouldn't even bother. I can live with a device kind of locked to Apple's ways and operations, but not also locked to a network that I don't rate or want. |

I don't know about any of the Orange related stuff, sorry.
I'm on O2, & I Jailbroke my 3GS running 3.0.1, using RedSn0w. Very easy, no problems at all. As I'm with O2 anyway though I haven't had any need to then also unlock it. To avoid updating to 3.1 just make sure you don't allow iTunes to update it! AFAIK... Updating to 3.1 may not prevent it from being Jailbroke in future, as there should be a solution soon from what I gather, but it *will* prevent it from being unlocked in future, as OS3.1 also updates the baseband. To be able to update to 3.1 & retain the ability to unlock requires using customised firmware which contains the pre3.1 baseband. The iPhone Dev Team blog has lots of info: http://blog.iphone-dev.org/ |

I have a iPhone 3G and everything was straight forward, if you get a 3Gs theres something extra you will need to do to enable your phone to be future proof with jailbreaking...... you will need to read up on this. you will need to have the iPhones 3.0 and 3.0.1 firmware files to jailbreak the iPhone (unless you get an unlocked iPhone via net). to unlock the handset you will need to add the source http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com then install ultrasn0w and reboot phone and stick sim in. personally if your not too fussed about getting a 3Gs I managed to get an iPhone 3G for about 276 from avforums classified ads section |

Once it is jailbroken and you can access cydia then you should be able to get the necessary information backed up to saurik's server that will allow you to restore to 3.0 (and 3.0.1 in the near future) without having to have Apple's permission. |

I've got the 3G and used PWNAGE Tool to jailbreak and Ultrasnow to unlock. I prefer that method, Redsn0w wouldn't work for me, Pwnage makes a firmware for you to restore through iTunes (just press shift (pc) or option (mac) to select it from your hard drive

Hi, Chaps
Thanks for the further replies. Haven't done this yet, but probably will one night after a couple of pints of dutch courage. Main reason for hoding back and not risking it is the fact that I do expect the official news anyminute soon that Orange will have the 3G model at least. Should be in the next couple of weeks if it's gonna happen. That's perfect for me as I have a sim only Orange sim with loadsa minutes / texts, and data, so no contract. Fairly happy to go back on contract with Orange if they have the iphone. I paid £320 for this one off 02, PAYG, and probably would get £250 on ebay for the phone, and maybe £50 or so seperately for the payg simcard, as it has 7 months of unlimited data on it? So, money back near enough, and shiny new one all legit on Orange, on my main phone number, happy days! If and when I do the jailbreak / unlock, I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks again |

OP - wouldn't it be cheaper and more effective to buy out of your current Orange contract and move to O2?
I've just done this with my T-Mobile contract, which had 18 months left to run. It cost £214 to buy myself out and I now have an iPhone 3GS with a 2-year contract which costs me £35/month with unlimited internet usage. I sold my Nolia 5800 handset on Ebay for £140 so I only lost out on £74

Hi, Jaxxfan
I use a Nokia E51 on Orange sim only (ie, rolling 30 day contract). For £25 I get 800 x network mins, UNLIMITED landline calls 24/7, and plenty of texts. Fantastic phone, fantastic package, and with my (coveted) number I've had for business for nearly 20 years. With that, I now carry an iphone 3G, on 02 payg, as per above posts. The iphone is my pda/ gadget. I don't use it as a phone. (except divert Orange number to it evenings if out for the night) . I dont care what anyone says, the iphone is the best gadget ever! (I'm a hardcore Nokia fan of 20 years by the way). As a 'phone' the iphone is, perhaps, arguably, maybe, not as good as my nokia. I dunno yet. Nokia's best rival as a great gadget / pda is the N97. I awaited it eagerly, ready to give up my iphone. Tried it the day it came out. I will admit I was gutted, really. Not even in the same universe as the iphone for usability, pleasure, and every other aspect of pda / gadget. (Also have tried latest Android offerings. Mmm, close, but no cigar) I can guarantee everyone who is interested to know, that the 02 3G signal is nowhere near as good as Orange. I know this because as I said, I carry both with me at all times. I often have to use the Joikuspot sware on my Nokia (which amazingly turns the Symbian-run E51 into a wi-fi hub!), just to get the iphone to piggy-back my Orange 3g signal via wi-fi, because there is no 02 fast data signal. So therefore my ultimate solution as you can see, is an iphone with an Orange sim! I have one possible reservation, though. That is, I know that the E51, a serious Nokia business phone, has a really excellent chassis structure / antenna, and therefore does achieve a good signal compared to many phones. It's always possible therefore that an Orange sim in an iphone is not as good a signal anyway. I don't know. My wife has the same Nokia with Orange sim, so as and when I unlock the iphone, I can place them side by side, both running Orange, and I will let you know the result. |

Thanks teedubblu - that's interesting feedback.
However, the OP (captainnorth) has a slightly different problem and it was his query I was answering. I guess it also depends where you live. On the south coast, the coverage from O2 is excellent whereas with T-Mobile it was non-existent - hence my need to buy myself out of my contract. |

Well. I have done the jailbreak and unlock, and thanks to all those who posted help here. Hope I haven't hijacked the OP's posting, but hopefully my own experience actually answers his question, as I had the very same question.
I have 02 (UK payg) iphone 3g. version 3.0.1 (7A400). Modem firmware 04.26.08. I have winXp Home Edition. Downloaded redsn0w-win_08 and 'iphone1,2_3.0.1_7A400_Restore.ipsw' Followed this link: http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=4301 and: http://modmyi.com/forums/iphone-news...0-redsn0w.html ignored step 2 as advised above, on this thread. So I ran redsn0w 8, and browsed to the 'iphone1,2_3.0.1_7A400_Restore.ipsw', and opened it. Got the message ''unable to recognise specified ipsw'' This was resolved by downloading the 3.0 ipsw instead of the 3.0.1, as suggested elsewhere on a web forum. After that the process went ok. Got Jailbreaked, and went straight on to unlocking as descibed in this link: http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=4253 Put the Orange sim in and put Orange's settings in the iphone (as above from andybono1) I now have my iphone running on Orange!! Mission accomplished. All seems to function ok so far. All iphone processes seem so far to be there, just as if I was running it on 02. The carrier 'Orange' is there, signal bars, and '3G' when in 3G. Also downloaded Cycorder, the Cydia video camera app.. Cool. There is still a disappointment, though, and one I can't do anything about. As I detailed above, my Nokia E51 has a tremendous signal quality, presumably due to a great chassis / antenna construction. Now that I have the Orange sim from that in my iphone, I am not getting as good a quality signal. It is taking me back to before the time I bought my E51, and had a number of phones before that. They were just like the iphone is now. In particular that unfortunately means that right here in my office area, the relatively weak Orange signal is tending to try to switch between a barely do-able 3G signal, and a half reasonable gprs signal, and the result is quite often that it just hangs in between the two, not giving a signal quite on either, so no signal. This is a real disappointment. To be fair, it's not so much that the iphone has a poor chassis or antenna, moreso that the Nokia E51 is exceptionally good. All the same, Apple should address this, if it wants to be considered as a serious, or 'business' phone as well as being the World's allround greatest gadget. A couple of other issues that I have to learn to live with probably. I have 2 absolute killer 'apps' on the Symbian-run E51 that are its crowning glory, and which I don't think the iphone can do either of. One is 'Joikuspot', that allows my E51 to literally turn into a wireless hub, from which I then can browse internet on Laptop, pda etc.. (I understand the 3GS has 'tethering', but don't know exactly how that works, and besides I have a 3g not 3Gs). The other is 'TotalRecall'. A totally fantastic App that runs in the background and automatically records INCOMING calls, as well as outgoing, without any 'beep'. Vital for my business. And as far as I can see, incredibly not available anywhere for iphone, even though there are 60,000+ apps?! (spoofapp for cydia, does optional outgoing call record only I think?) So in conclusion, I am really excited about having an Orange iphone, sure, but it still isn't quite my total dream device. If the jailbreak / unlock continues to not present problems though, then I will certainly be upgrading to the quicker processor'd 3GS and unlocking that when it's possible to do so. |

you need the 3.0 ipsw file to jailbreak 3.0.1, you start off on a clean official 3.0.1 then in redsn0w point to 3.0 and then continue jailbreak
