Mobile for kids

Just bought a Siemens A55 for my kid. Upon registering it i was told i had to register it in my name or my child (aged 11) would have to give the details over the phone. Ive heard of security but this was a bit much i thought
Now the phone is registered in my name. After a long phone call to Orange, including being offered various insurances i was asked to give credit card details for a scheme they had introduced whereby my child if they run out of credit can ask for more credit (£5 i think ) to be added (ie in emergency).
Has anyone had all this trouble with registering and also has anyone heard of this idea of taking your CC details and allowing it to be used when run out of credit? This seems knew to me since i last registered a phone.
Cheers for any info!

The credit card thing is new, but Orange was like this five years ago when I bought my first mobile. I was 10, and I did it all myself - no problems caused by it.
