Hadn't watched the show in years but tuned in for Rita's death. Thought the scenes with the Doyles were excellent. Nice touch having Louise in spar explaining where her living room used to be!

That was a great episode last night, especially with the big bust up at the end between Yvonne and the rest.

We can see that the Doyles are a very dysfunctional family. Even Bela doesn't come out of it too well.....he's playing the devoted husband, but as Yvonne points out, he used and abused Rita over the years.

I think her problem is that she is head over heels in love with a total clown and does what he says and do. Why did the clown return to Ireland from Oz if it was not to mourn his other halves mother. He was not home five minutes and he wanted to go out. Last night he gave the impression that he thinks he is God's gift to women the way he was walking around with the towel around him

I've just been watching all the Doyle scenes from this week, really good stuff. I like how they've brought up how Bela treated Rita over the years and used it as an excuse for Jimmy's absence.

It's pity the show can't be always this good, can't be always this well realised.

Quite a realistic portrayal of family life too. At some funerals at least, family members are at each other's throats as is depicted here, and the Doyles are certainly a dysfunctional family.

That didn't wash as an excuse for Jimmy's absence at all though considering Jimmy only left Carraigstown around six years ago and was always on good terms with Bela.
He'd hardly shun him now out of the blue.
They really should have came up with a better story for his absence.

Things like this bring up old wounds, he may have been on good terms with Bela but had he forgiven him?

I could be wrong but I'm sure it was Jimmy who was always wary of Bela back in the day.

As Yvonne said Rita had a hard life with Bela, it was certainly portrayed like that in the early days.

Top quality stuff this week. Haven't watched since the domestic abuse story in 2010 and I think I'll start watching again,

One thing though - the Tommy/Judith/Luke story is boring and so unrealistic

I fast forward through all that, it's the kind of crap that puts me off watching the show regularly.

Although Blackie Connors shagging a doctor is pretty funny.

We're supposed to believe that Jimmy stays away from the funeral in order to snub Bela, but that doesn't make any sense. He could pay his respects to his mother without having any contact with Bela if need be.

Judith's laugh does not wash with me. Its sounds like an old horse trying to give birth.

I was actually about to get on and say the BiB, and the rest of your post is spot on too.

Me too. Plus the Dermot/Jo/Meave triangle. It's just the same thing over and over: Meave wants to go out; Dermot says yes; at the last minute, Dermot changes his mind and they have to stay in; Jo is staying in and wants to watch telly; Jo insults Meave; Meave goes to leave in a huff; Dermot convinces her to stay; Jo has to apologize; Ben has a strop and I die a little inside.

The recent Lucy storyline was outstanding....a disturbed but highly intelligent young woman who is a liar and fantasist, who worms her way into a family on which she is fixated and ends up causing havoc. Probably better than any storyline on Coronation Street or Eastenders in the last year or two.

I kind of want EE to do a similar story with Carol and Alice.

It would certainly work but it needs to be a real slow burner just like the Lucy one was.....I think the storyline ran for over a year.

She had the stroke years ago at Suzanne and Damiens wedding if I remember correctly I think she had a heart attack in the nursing home.

The Lucy storyline got really stupid and boring after a while, when it was just the same thing over and over, and it didn't help that Delores and Lucy can't act. It would still need to be as long, but it would certainly need to be handled a bit better.

Actually, considering how shit the EE writers are these days, it's maybe best to give it a miss.

I'm pretty sure it was a stroke. From the DS spoiler section from last week:

“Yvonne admits that she ordered for Rita not to be resuscitated following her stroke.”

The only criticism I'd make of the Lucy storyline is that it came to too speedy and messy a conclusion. I'm surprised too that they didn't go for something like Lucy planning to kill Pete (or even Wayne), which would have meant high drama.

At it's height though, it was very strong, especially when she managed to turn everyone against Pete and convince them he was a monster.

I'm not denying it was a good story, I just think it was let down by - as you say - the rushed ending (bringing Harry in to it killed it for me) and - IMO - the rubbish acting from the two leads. And yes, I was waiting for some real high drama at the end. I wasn't the only one: on the RTé boards people were hoping that for Christmas Lucy would come back and try to kill Delores.

The Christmas episodes were terrible btw. I don't know why they didn't keep the Lucy storyline until then with her being exposed as a fraud on Christmas Day.

Instead we had the rubbish storyline of Dermot, Jo and Maeve being at loggerheads, plus the Dillons.

Fair City doesn't really 'do' big Christmas storylines though. It's the only soap I know of that has a small Christmas story every year, with no major disasters. What was this years? Oh, Cas couldn't cook the turkey on time. Made a nice change from the Brannings' drama on EE!

In other news: anyone else hoping Eddie really does fleece the crap out of everyone? I want him to take everyone's cash and leave with a big happy head on him.

Speaking of Cass, he was supposed to go on a trip with Finbar before staying after Rita died. Did he go in the end. He hasn't been seen since the funeral.

I assume that €50000 Wayne got last week will soon be in Eddies pocket. Hopefully that'd be him gone soon and Zumo can work alongside Decco in the Smart Office. We've hardly seen the Bishops recently. They're supposed to be living with Carol at the moment. Show us some of that instead of the same nauseating crap from the Dillons

I can't stand either of the O'Dwyers though, especially Val. It's a wonder the shop still has any customers after listening to her. Don't know what Christy sees in her, although after Renee, it's an improvement. I look forward to the day she finds out the truth about Eddie being in prison with Decco.
