Hi all,

I got one hdr which fails on boot and one hdr which works perfectly. Is it possible to use an usb memory stick to update the failed machine with the latest boot loader and latest software?

Regards

Not as far as I know, from one machine to the other.

Humax have said that they will be putting the files on the website soon.

What failure message do you get? Or how far does it get, what can you see?

Rgds.

I just see Boot on the display on the box and the blue Humax screen with version U7.52 showing in the bottom left. Stays on that for ever.

Would the failed box work if i copied the files off the working box's HDD to the failed box's HDD or is the boot program etc on some chip?

The failed box did work for about 1 day, this was about March this year. I remember leaving it on and then i came home it was in the failed state. OTA Upgrade went wrong??

There are no operating system files on the HDD. Mine is external and I can swap drives with no problem. That's why you can stick a new blank HDD in and the hdr will boot and format it for you.

Ok, so are you saying if i installed a brand new HDD into the failed box, it would move on from the blue Humax screen and as it has the U7.52 loader which is the latest version then it will search out from the satellite the new v1.03??

No way of telling, the hdr should boot without a hdd attached at all, it just warns you that there is no hdd attached. Just saying there's nothing on the HDD you can copy, all the OS is in nvram. It won't do any harm to try booting with the HDD disconnected.

It's not like a PC that has a tiny bootstrap in NVram and then gets the info from it's boot disc

On the failed box turn it on and try pressing the menu button on the remote, if you get into the menus then do a factory reset, I had a simular problem and it worked for me

Tried the menu button but am i to do this whilst turning the box on like with Sky and backup button to download new software?

I know this may sound daft but...........

If it is under warranty why not just get it replaced?

TBH I don't think you're going to revive your box. Its as Graham said, everything to do with the HDR's operation is solid state within the HDR. The only thing recorded to the the hard drive are the TV programmes. If you have a permanent boot failure then its a problem within the HDR's memory / control chips.
