Proms Last Night - red button?
derek rumble
13-09-2009
So what am I mis-understanding? Probably something obvious.

I wanted to watch some of Proms in the Park - the Irish concert was broadcast and the Radio Times told me that other Proms in the Parks were available via the red buton...

Pressing the red button I hoped to be able to switch to the Hyde Park broadcast (why would I particularly want to watch the Northern Ireland one by default?). But no luck - couldn't get to Hyde Park via the red button.

Yours,

Puzzled from Shropshire.

Not all Red Button services are available on all platforms - unfortunatley the BBC don't always make this clear in their promos nor on their website. Maestro-Cam was also not available on Freesat although the official BBC Proms 2009 website doesn't mention the fact.
All the Proms in the Park concerts are available to watch on BBC iPlayer from today. You can also listen on iPlayer to the Hyde Park concert as broadcast on BBC Radio 2 last night.

Thanks for that information - I am enjoying my new freesat+ box but I hope I don't discover too many limitations' after the event'. As I said above, why broadcast the Northern Ireland concert (on BBC4) to all of mainland uk?

Thanks, I knew about the replays availble on bbc.co.uk; would have preferred to watch live (and record too).

Oh you ungrateful Philistine.
You should have been delighted to get a taste of Irish culture.

But I wanted to watch Wogan! He was definitely still very Irish this morning.

Yeah, but I was talking about culture.

We hit the same problem, but also run Sky+ from the same dish. I understand the differences between Sat feed and DTV broadcast, but why could the Foxsat not interpret the data when my (ancient) Sky+ box did? Both show the local BBC shows, and I always thought they looked at the same data feed. I suspect it was another 'feature' of the Freesat system, along with all the randomly dropped series recordings that are now all recorded seamlessly on the Sky+ system as a back up.

Help - I'm beginning to sound like a Sky groupie.

Because the BBC haven't done the necessary work to enable it on the Freesat platform, it is not high up on their priority list.

Rgds.
