LOL!! I love the way he tries to put Britney down because he didn't win anything. Him and Britney are basically the same, without autotune and a bunch of people behind them doing everything for them, they'd be totally f*cked. At least Britney can dance!

2007 actually, the year Britney opened up with Gimme More, so it was two years ago.

What? Kanye maybe a tosser but he's obviously a talented tosser. His work as a producer speaks for itself. He is nothing like the manufactured and talentless Britney.

Well, as the biggest song of his I know was basically him sampling Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger by Daft Punk which in turn samples Edwin Birdsong's Cola Bottle Baby... so he's hardly the producer of that one, for example.

Oh wow, he is such a talented producer... So lets break it down, huh?

Unlike the hey-day of music when production relied upon REAL people playing REAL instruments, nowadays everything is sampled on a computer and all put together with technology and jiggery pokery. So if you were to say he was good at using computer programs, I'd probably have given you that one.

He's no note shuffler like Quincy Jones, he probably knows jack sh*t about musical theory or how to construct a song, just relies on the computer generating some over-used 4 to da flor clap beat. I doubt he plays any instrument too..

So what do we have... No real instruments being played by no real people with vocals that have een synthesised or autotuned... Oh man, this guy is just the most talented producer/musician to ever have lived!

His lyrics are self satisfying and sh*t too!

Kanye West talented? Get a grip on reality! Dear God Almighty ! As I said, without technology he'd probably be flipping burgers by now!

If I was to say that I was extremely good at doing calculations and then went on to say that I relied on a calculator. What you call me talented? ... Thought so

Production has never depended upon the producer playing an instrument, so I'm not sure what point you are trying to make.

As to your views on technology, all that you are doing is showing your ignorance of the modern production process. Technology cannot write a critically acclaimed record for you, it is merely a tool. How you use that tool, just like any musical instrument, is down to you and whatever talent you happen to have. These tools are available to lots of people, yet few make records as good as Kanye's. Most not even close. So whats the difference? Talent.

But tell me. Since you clearly know so much about this modern technology, which programs have you used? What experience do you have of this technology? Or are you just spouting off from a position of complete and utter ignorance?

Ignorant, me? Have you completed a music degree? Did you get a 1st in your dissertation?

Kate Nash managed it from her bedroom using no more than a beat generator and 4 simple chords. You're going to tell me how talented she is too, right?

These tools are not widely available to many people at all. Cheap versions for home maybe but how many people do you know with state of the art studios and software in their bedrooms?

Because something is critically acclaimed, that doesn't make it ubiquitously good, it just means a few knobs have sat down, listened to it with some cheap speakers and rather liked it. You seem to be equating mass appeal to talent, therefore nullifying your statement about Britney!

You know exactly what point I'm making regarding production. Hardly hired a room full of session musicians to record the sh*t did he? Nope, rather used a computer to generate fake instrumenttion.

Since you asked the question first, let me ask you in return. Which programs have you used? What experience do you have of this technology? Or are you just spouting from position of complete and utter ignorance?

Me, I've actually been inside a recording studio! I do have a little knowledge of this technology but I also play instruments and think it's much, much better.

If you wanna go and see some gimp on tour using a vocoder and singing along to a backing track - good for you. Me, I'd rather have the pleasure of experiencing real music from a band with real vocals...

I'd rather see talented vocalists and musicians jamming along with inherent ingenuity. Not watch someone hit the play button on a backing track and sing along on autotune. That's if the mic isn't locked off.

ignorant of the technology, not of music. I think that point was fairly clear.

There were plenty of untalented three chord wonders long before the sampler. Does that make all live musicians untalented?

These tools are not widely available to many people at all. Cheap versions for home maybe but how many people do you know with state of the art studios and software in their bedrooms?
Yes, they are widely available. I've used them. I've owned many of them. I can download a copy of autotune right now if you like. Kanye wasn't born in a recording studio, so how do you think he managed to make his way up from nothing?

Because something is critically acclaimed, that doesn't make it ubiquitously good, it just means a few knobs have sat down, listened to it with some cheap speakers and rather liked it. You seem to be equating mass appeal to talent, therefore nullifying your statement about Britney!
You equate mass appeal with critical acclaim??? Since when did Britney receive critical acclaim?

Critical acclaim is the probably the least subjective measure of talent in what can only be a subjective matter.

You know exactly what point I'm making regarding production. Hardly hired a room full of session musicians to record the sh*t did he? Nope, rather used a computer to generate fake instrumenttion.
So someone who tells a session musician to play a walking bassline, a I - IV - V - IV chord progression, or a shuffle drumbeat is talented. But someone who tells a computer to do the same isn't. That makes zero sense.

Since you asked the question first, let me ask you in return. Which programs have you used? What experience do you have of this technology? Or are you just spouting from position of complete and utter ignorance?
The fact that you refuse to answer says a lot. Like I thought, your attitude is born out of ignorance.

Me? Plenty. Cubase, Logic, Ableton, Pro-tools amongst many others.

So you enjoy listening to acoustic music more than non-acoustic music. So what? Is that your argument?

It appears to me that you are simply extremely close minded when it comes to music. Anything you like is good and it's makers are talented, but if you don't like it then it's crap and the maker is untalented.

Personally, I like both acoustic and non-acoustic music, but what I appreciate more than anything is composition. Whether something is composed with pen and paper and played by real musicians, or composed on Ableton and played by a sampler, I really couldn't care less. All I care about is the emotion the music conveys, whether it pushes music forward, whether it excites me. I see no reason to close myself off from some great music because it doesn't fit some pre-conceived and outdated notion of how real music should be played. if you do, then I feel sorry for you.

Ah another fool who can't understand how taste and talent in the music industry is a matter of opinion rather than fact.

So one person says that Kanye doesn't have talent
Another person says that Kanye does have talent.
And the second person is the fool for confusing taste and talent??? Did you even attempt to engage your brain before posting? I suspect you only have a problem with people who confuse taste with talent if they disagree with your own opinions

Besides, if you actually took the time to read this thread you would realise I'm not basing my opinion purely on my taste.

Plus, I'm more than happy to accept that someone can be talented but not to my taste (Taylor Swift for one).
