Sony RDR-HXD710 dubbing problem.
I've had this DVD recorder for about 3 years and it's a great bit of kit. Once I turned off the automatic updates, it's worked faultlessly.
I usually fill the dvd when dubbing from the HDD, and there's invariably some compression, so it works in "auto rec mode". No problems there at all. However, if I attempt to record less than 4.7GB of data to the disc, ie dubbing in normal mode, the recorder shows "dirty disc" and the machine shuts down. Just wondered if anyone else has had this problem? |

i had a dubbing problem on a panasonic, and then the same on a sony - which was still in warranty, and i returned this and got a replacement. The HDD worked fine, just grating noises like a head crash, while dubbing. HiSpeed dubbing failed, then normal speed, but pre-recorded would still play. In hindsight, I think it was the same issue
i later found some threads (may be on avforums) about cleaning a disk washer you have to open the case, and take apart the disk drive. just a few screws the disk mechnism has a small rubber washer (about 1" diameter") which pushes onto the centre spindle of a DVD. apparently if dirty this slips, and causes the problems. Mine had a some dust etc on it - the remedy was to clean with denatured alcolhol, and a cotton wool bud - I actually used some InkCartridge flush, which is very similar but not flammable not hard, took about 20 mins max, and now the panasonic is as right as rain sounds like a similar issue |

Like I say, as long as I put more than 4.7GB on the disc and it goes into "auto rec mode", it works perfectly. I'll stick with that. On past performance, if I start mucking about with it, I'll only make it worse!
