All I hope for this SCD is that we do not have another John Sergeant fiasco

I think people should be able to vote for who they like without fear of criticism from others. It does seem to be that some people take this a tad seriously.

What I don't understand is why nobody made such a hoopla over Kate G. She stayed in for about the same length of time as JS and was voted off naturally at the point in the competition where it would have been truly ridiculous to keep her in (and she didn't, I reiterate: She was voted off by the GBP). So why wouldn't the same have happened with John?
That's why I've always expected this was done to promote the SCD brand. JS would have been voted off at some point, probably even before the final. Nothing to indicate the GBP wouldn't have kicked him out at some point.
Too much blah blah....

The love the GBP had for JS was in a different league to KG.
I felt people were voting for KG to see her make an entertaining fool of herself week after week, but it was genuine affection for JS as well as cocking a snoot at the judges for been so harsh in their criticism at JS been kept in by the GBP.
I do believe JS would have gone all the way to the final.

Can't imagine why anyone would fear criticism over such a triviality. Now that really would be taking it too seriously.

FWIW these discussions tend to circle round the real issue...either because people don't grasp it or it's convenient to ignore. Ironically Sergeant himself got it and highlighted it...because he understands the nuances of selection by voting..

Voters can and do use whatever absurd set of criteria they fancy...be it motivated by a fantasy romance that's never going to happen, a puerile vendetta against those 'evil' judges, a need to express sympathy which isn't justified or required, a competition with an imagined love rival that exists only in the voter's head, or whatever...that is never going to change however much people like me criticise. I accept that...but the problem is that with a simple (i.e crude) voting system, these emotional and often manipulated responses can assume undue significance.

To use Sergeant as a (simplified) example, he may have been getting 50% of the vote...but the other 50% of voters may have wanted him out...and could do very little about it. People tend to forget that these televotes are a very unsophisticated measure of viewer opinion. In an ideal scenario, the elimination process would seek to balance out all the various shades of opinion...sound or crazy, manipulated or otherwise...within practical limits of course.

My recollection is that there was more or less exactly the same level of hooplah over Kate Garraway.

Yes there was - it certainly got pretty heated when she stayed in after Gabby Logan and Penny Lancaster went out before her. I think she stayed in for about as long as J.S. too.

Kate was eliminated from the show in week 7, John withdrew in week 10.

It's also interesting that at the time of their leaving, Kate had been bottom with the judges 5 times, and John 4 - so as far as the judges were concerned, John wasn't actually as bad as Kate

To be fair that's partly because Kate was competing for the first week solely against the women of Series 5 who were almost universally excellent, and for the first two weeks John was competing against the men of Series 6, who were almost universally a shitshow.

I agree and I'd add that Kate's reaction and John's reaction to being kept in each week were poles apart imho.

Fair point!

In her 7 weeks on the show, which equalled 6 weeks of dancing, Kate was in bottom 5 times. The only time she wasn't in the bottom 2 with the judges was actually the week Gabby went!

In his 9 weeks on the show equalling 7 dances John was bottom 4 times (week one he wasn't even bottom 2 and scored higher than Don and Lilia!) John first hit bottom week 5, rebouned on week 6 and then settled down there again for weeks 7, 8 and 9.

It seems that Kate's awfullness was apparent from the start but John's snuck up on them while they were looking elsewhere. Probably at Gary's shimmy or something.

Kate was truly appalling from the very start and got progressively worse as the nerves really hit in. She didn't just fail to keep up with the progress the others were making, she literally deteriorated week on week until, ironically her very last dance when she did improve a tiny bit. Personally I hated watching her being dragged around the floor like a sack of potatoes and couldn't understand at all what the GB voting public found to "enjoy" about her performaces at all.

In contrast, John S surprised us all at the beginning with a very charming, dignified and accomplished first waltz which deservedly got him OK marks if I remember correctly. Then for several weeks thereafter he continued to do OK and, IMHO stayed on merit. It was only his last 2/3 performances which really fell apart - largely because at his age and fitness he naturally couldn't keep up with the pace, and in contrast his competitors were all coming on in leaps and bounds. However, he kept his dignity and wit to the last, so despite the dancing, I at least could understand what people were still voting for. I agree that if he hadn't withdrawn he might very well have actually won
