Can't imagine why anyone would fear criticism over such a triviality. Now
that really would be taking it too seriously.
FWIW these discussions tend to circle round the real issue...either because people don't grasp it or it's convenient to ignore. Ironically Sergeant himself got it and highlighted it...because he understands the nuances of selection by voting..
Voters can and do use whatever absurd set of criteria they fancy...be it motivated by a fantasy romance that's never going to happen, a puerile vendetta against those 'evil' judges, a need to express sympathy which isn't justified or required, a competition with an imagined love rival that exists only in the voter's head, or whatever...that is never going to change however much people like me criticise. I accept that...but the problem is that with a simple (i.e crude) voting system, these emotional and often manipulated responses can assume undue significance.
To use Sergeant as a (simplified) example, he may have been getting 50% of the vote...but the other 50% of voters may have wanted him out...and could do very little about it. People tend to forget that these televotes are a very unsophisticated measure of viewer opinion. In an ideal scenario, the elimination process would seek to balance out all the various shades of opinion...sound or crazy, manipulated or otherwise...within practical limits of course.
