Susan Boyle "Wild Horses" - on AGT
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8-RXE_1iWs
...am I missing something? Everyone seems to be raving about this performance but I actually find it fairly poor ... I remember Lily Allen saying she has little control over her voice and timing and I have to agree! I find it irritating that she comes in with words out of time...I don't like the way her accent comes through in some of the phrasing, yet at other times doesn't ......okay, "poor" might be a bit harsh but certainly not "world class". Great story though. |

I don't like her live performances, she is erratic vocally, but I heard her recorded version of Wild Horses and loved it, I bet her album will be amazing.

I fail to see what everyone is raving about. Americans are very easily pleased...
Don't get me wrong, it's not terrible, but the way people are raving about her you'd be expecting her voice to sound like the voice of god, and quite simply...it isn't. |

One of my favourite Stones tracks... someone rang up LBC while i was driving home and was raving about SuBo's version. What really got my music snob dander up was the fact that this woman had clearly never heard the Stones original, i got the impression that she barely knew who they were. But then i calmed down a bit and begain to chuckle as it occurred that there is probably hardly anyone less appropriate than SuBo to sing a Keith Richards song -they are just about as opposite in life experiences as you can get. ...although they do have similiar hair!
![]() But all that said and done i don't have anything against SuBo, i hope she has the time of her life and enjoys every minute of it. So i clicked on the link, i expected to find it actually pretty good after hearing all the hype - lacking any edge but still moving... In my opinion it was really really dreadful, the whole hook of the song is lost and her voice is just average... Of course this is just my opinion and i promise you i listened to it with an open mind, i actually expected that i would be writing on here about after all my misgivings that it suprised me with how good it was, infact it suprised me with how bad it was... |

Granted, her performance is a bit rough round the edges but bear in mind she doesn't come from a performing background and won't have had a lot of professional voice training. I'm sure she'll have been pretty aware of the size of TV audience she was performing to and it was live so no room for cockups so I'd imagine she was pretty nervous considering she's barely performed like that more than a handful of times in the last few months.
I like the song and I take my hat off to her for grabbing the chances while they're offered to her; I mean, how many other unproven acts would get to perform on primetime US TV without even having released a single record anywhere?! |

I'm sure she is a delightful person but her voice is only average to good. It's not spectacular as people seem to be forced to believe. It's depressing that people seem to be gushing and falling over themselves over someone who is just singing a dodgy karaoke cover of what once a most beautiful song. |

Boyle's "cover" is a terrible, soulless "rendition" of a deeply personal and emotional Jagger composition .....

Her singing is lovely if flawed, and good luck to her, but honestly, this raised key version of Wild Horses has been done to death, and Susan's version sounds almost exactly like as well as pretty much average compared to the many identical versions of this song that have been done by countless female singers who have similar voices.

I never thought I'd be on here defending Susan Boyle or anyone from one of these TV talent shows but even if her singing is slightly 'flawed' or her timing isn't perfect, she stills sings the pants off a lot of people that pass for professional singers these days (Cheryl Cole, anyone?).
I don't think people are looking for technical brilliance with her, although I'm sure her record company will have vocal coaches helping her with all that stuff - she's this year's hard luck story made good, she's not unpleasant to listen to and she's got a lot of public support. I hadn't heard the song before last week, as a lot of other people may not have so it won't suffer from comparison with previous versions and will be taken on its own merits (as are many cover versions, whether identikit copies of the original or re-arranged masterpieces). |

I Loved it!
With SuBo, I thought the audition was something special, probably down to editing, but still I really thought it was great, then she got to live shows and to be honest I wasn't as impressed, nothing terrible but I think the initial editing had me thinking she was better than she actually is. A few months later and I heard Wild Horses and I just love it and think that performance on AGT was better than anything she produced on BGT, she appeared to have the obvious nerves, but lacked the pressure that seemed to bog her down on BGT. It's a really really nice song, sung excellently and with a brilliant live performance. I hope her album sells by the bucketload, even if it's just the one, she's living the dream she's obviously had for years and a year ago would never have believed could possibly happen. I hope she takes for all it's worth and continues to enjoy it. |

Susan has a good voice - surprised what they've done with the song. Its totally different from the Stones' version.

She's a decent singer but I really think she is totally overrated, there are so many better singers out there if you're into that sort of music.
I can see why the Americans love her though, and I think she'll do well for a while at least. |
