New Kings of Leon fan

Hi DS, hope all is well! So, 'Only By The Night' is the only Kings of Leon album I have listened to, and I love it!

However, I know a band doesn't suddenly become good between their 3rd and 4th albums, and was wondering if anyone could recommend me some songs from their older material?

Cheers

I would recommed their previous album ( Because Of The Times) as it was the album that got me into them. Their 1st 2 albums have a far more raw less polished sound than the recent 2 but they do have some good tracks on them none the less.

You have probably heard this a lot, but honestly their older stuff is better than Only By The Night.

Would really recommend you listen to;
Knocked Up
Slow Night So Long
Charmer
My Party
Four Kicks
On Call
The Bucket
Black Thumbnail
Fans

These are my favourites, hope you like.

A-Ha Shake Heartbreak is my favourite album, you may be very surprised as well if you listen to Youth and Young Manhood. The sound is completely different and it really does sound like four rednecks who have picked up instruments for the first time.

well, the pursuit of money certainly make a band more radio-friendly

Agreed. I've said it time and time again. "Because Of The Times" is the best, then "Aha Shake Heartbreak" then "Youth & Young Manhood" then "Only By The Night"

It annoys me that "new" Kings Of Leon fans don't take the time to listen to their older albums and think "Sex On Fire" is their tour de force. Their older albums had more depth and originality. truth is "Sex On Fire" "Use Somebody" could have been written by anyone. That said I don't think "Only By The Night" is a crap album. Just think its overrated.

Not really of KOL myself, but I saw this in hmv (i think) the other day.

Its a boxset with Youth & Young Manhood, Aha Shake Heartbreak, Because Of The Times.

Good value if you like them and you want their back catalogue.

i urge you to listen to 'Molly's Chambers'! my favourite of their "earlier" stuff, along with 'Taper Jean Girl' and 'Milk' - hope you like them

i'd also recommend the box set mentioned by No Face, especially 'Because Of The Times' as its the most similar to 'Only By The Night', being the previous album.

but to be fair, many people who don't have a huge interest in music were less likely to of heard of Kings Of Leon before Only By The Night. that's no-ones fault, they were just less commerciallly successful which means, naturally, less people would of heard of them. but now that they have had much mainstream success over the last year, thanks to Sex On Fire & Use Somebody, it would of brought more people's attention to them and many of those people will want to seek out their older stuff, and if they don't want to then that's up to them. but that's probably why KOL recently released a box set of their previous albums.

However they weren't exactly unheard of before "Only By The Night" I remember when they first came out around 5 years ago they were being hailed as the future of rock music, they've since had 2 top 5 albums, one of which was number 1 and they have headlined Glastonbury all before "sex on fire"

I liked 'Molly's Chambers'. Download that.

Not a big fan of the new stuff though.

There has been a progression of music through all their albums though, they haven't suddenly gone radio-friendly.

i know they weren't completely underground, and that they previously had a no.1 album with Because Of The Times. personally i've always been aware of KOL, being a music fan, although i'm not the biggest fan of them, but i meant in terms of being a household name, being known by people who may only have a passing interest in music, having their songs played on commercial radio, performing on the Brits etc. those sort of things.

I agree. I went to see them shortly after Because Of The Times came out and no-one I knew had heard of them. They were also playing the Carling Academy in Birmingham.

I've only got the first album which is a great garage country swamp record. 'Red Morning Light' and 'Molly's Chambers' are well worth a listen.

I think I'll get the latest one as the Mrs liked 'Use Somebody' on Stricly last night.
