Bad soap accents...
BAD SOAP ACCENTS!
Ok - well Vicky Fowler wins that, but what about people from the same family who have different accent? e.g. Diane and her sister in Emmerdale, who were apparently brought up together, but have two different accents Or in Hollyoaks - The Deans and the Hunters have 4 kids each, and each one has a different accent!! Explanation at all or other examples?!

Adam Ricketts/Nicky in Coronation Street has a strange accent, a mixture of northern and southern.

Going back a bit now, but Sean Maguire as Aidan in Eastenders.
He was supposed to be 'fresh off the boat' from Ireland. It seemed to me that in each sentence, a couple of words would be in an Irish accent, and the rest of them in his native Ilford accent. Very Strange! Also notable, trivia fans, was that he often wore a Republic of Ireland Soccer shirt, with the sponsors name prominently displayed. Not something you often see on the BBC. The sponsor was OPEL, a brand not used in the UK (Vauxhall is the British branding) so I suppose they BBC felt it was OK. |

Hollyoaks is the classic example, as they cast a lot of characters from London agents and modelling agencies, and the rest from Liverpool and Manchester, so that members of families have different accents and no-one at all sounds like they are from Chester... the original Darren had an awful American accent for a while, even worse than Vicki Fowler's (no really, it really was).
No-one but me remembers Aussie soap Breakers, which used to be on after Neighbours, but I seem to recall that that was a bonanza of appalling accents, including one Aussie actor's attempt at French-Canadian. |

I've always through David Platt has a different accent to the rest of his family. I wouldn't claim to be any expert (I'm from down south), but his accent has never sounded 'Manchester' to me.

David Platt (Jack Shepherd) is from Bradford, and he has a very broad Bradford accent. As does Bombhead in Hollyoaks. And they both sound exactly the same for real!!

Nana Moon swings mid sentence from extremely posh to broad cockney. She has always done this. I remember her in Citizen Smith doing this.
The old guy in Steptoe and Sons and Hilda Ogden used to do this too. It was always a big surprise to hear them out of character. Rudi

Helen's daughter Rio in Crossroads had a dreadful American accent.
Stuart Milligan also used to get a lot of criticism for his accent as Max Samson in Crossroads which is odd as it was his real accent. |

Although it isn't as bad as some, Audrey ( Sue whatshername) from Corrie doesn't have a particularly convincing accent.
On the flipside John Savident (Fred Elliot) is very good when you hear what he really sounds like. |

In the early days of the soap it was a bit of a novelty that someone from the working classes went to university and there was a lot about how young Ken looked down on his dad cleaning his bike in the living room etc. |

My second son had a mid Atlantic accent up until he went to school on account of learning English from The Disney Channel. We have always lived in Glasgow, Scotland. Rudi

In River City (Scottish soap) the female who is supposed to be Aberdonian (can't remember her name) doesn't have an Aberdeen accent eventhough the actress comes from Aberdeen, mind you, she can't act either so that probably doesn't help.

Originally posted by barkingmad Vicki's accent was so crap they probably gave her time off to try and get her voice back to normal. She just couldn't keep it up! When she came home she was like "I'm a sophisti-KATEd (hehe) young lady" - What utter balls! Can't remember where she had supposed to have gone on holiday with Sharon but it was not somewhere in England and who the hell would she have picked up that accent from! (Sharon don't bloody talk like it!) Its a bit of a posh accent in my opinion! (Too posh for that clothes shredder)BAD SOAP ACCENTS! Ok - well Vicky Fowler wins that I would have thought that living with Sharon and Dennis for so long would have given her the opportunity to pick up their accents not a posh british accent while she was in some other country totally. If she was trying to change her accent it would not just happen all of a sudden, how would she know how to pronounce different words properly?!? Wouldn't a few words still sound american or wouldn't she still use terms that she did whilst she was in america? (I would because there are certain things you get so used to saying) When I saw that particular tedious episode I me and my brother nearly pissed ourselves laughing at the stupidity of it, and when my brother sees Vicky on TV now he always says "I'm a sophisticated young lady" lol. Also about that episode - well, gee, I was all like whaddddevvvver this is just so uncool!  Angel

Am I going mad or has Tom in Hollyoaks got a similar accent to Bombhead rather than the rest of his family. The fact I only watch Hollyoaks on a Sunday and normally with a hangover might have something to do with my hearing on his

the thing that annoyed me about vicki's american accent was that whenever she'd say 'where have you been' she'd pronounce it 'bean' instead of the american pronunciation 'bin'. i know of very few people back home who say 'where have you bean?'

Letita Dean was actually born in Lincolnshire (I think) and does sometimes let the odd word slip out in a non London way i.e. says one as wonn i.e. northern
as for Nana Moon Terry Wogan is always ripping her accent |
