I'm sorry, but Simon Cowell can't be serious!

Simon Cowell has admitted that he was blown away when he first heard new Leona Lewis single 'Happy'.

The music mogul, who signed the singer to his SyCo record label after she won The X Factor in 2006, described the track as "genius" and claimed that he could not stop listening to it.

"I remember where I was when I heard the song for the first time. I remember it starting and sitting up in my chair praying that the chorus was going to deliver on what I'd heard," he told ET Online.

"As soon as it hit the chorus, I turned it off, got [Leona] on the phone and said, 'This song is genius'. I couldn't stop playing it.

"When my friends came over from London it must have been on repeat about 25 times. All these people just falling in love with this record. I'd never seen a reaction like that before."

Cowell added that Lewis is under pressure to move on from the success of her debut single 'Bleeding Love', which topped the charts in 34 different countries.

"It's incredible that the first song did so well but you have to put that out of your mind. You have to always focus on the songs. I've always believed that if something's good, people will buy it."

Lewis releases 'Happy' on November 8. Her second album Echo follows a week later.
Yes it's a good song, but I don't think it's anything special and nowhere near as good as he's saying!

I think it's special and because she co-wrote it, it somehow feels more 'personal'
love it when the chorus kicks in

Calling it a good song is a very big stretch.

I actually prefer Run, Better In Time and Bleeding Love.

It's good.....but (like The Saturdays, who're about to release their second album, too) it's a bit of a let down. It's powerful and everything, but meh, not getting the hype.

It's not like Simon is going to say "I hate it" or "it's okay", is he?

Simon exaggerates everything; especially when it comes to Leona (not to mention Eoghan Quigg during X Factor )
It is a good song though.

Ok well that's your opinion which obviously differs from him. I happen to agree and think the song is stunning.

The 'I've never seen a reaction like that before' is over the top, it's not THAT special that it blows you away. It's a decent song, but that's it. Agree with the topic starter.

Regardless of how good the song is Simon is very OTT and he always has been, and he needs to be careful because people like my mum dont like Leona because she felt that Simon was ramming her down everyones throat.

Anyway at this stage I dont think Leona needs Simon to be shouting about the song to everyman and his dog. People will like the song and enjoy it without Simon's imput.

It looks like he'll hype up Leona before the release of every album

in the last album he hyped up Leona and took her to Operah and created that big buzz in America. Now he's hyping her up again and everything.

Well not every song Leona brings out will be a great hit. I haven't heard this one yet so cannot judge but I do like Leona very much. She is a lovely girl with a great talent, good luck to her.

It's in his best interests to hype her up since she's his act.

He hugely overyped 'Spirit', but it sold well so theres no reason for him not to hype her again. People will make up their own minds in the end though.

Oh yes, i'd do the same if i was Simon Cowell. I'm getting my money from it at the end of the day

Of course people will make up their mind if they already know an artist but Leona was new to the scene in USA so people went to check her up after the hype from Simon and co, it paid off. Now people have a clear view of who is Leona so Simon doesn't need to make himself look stupid cuz Leona is good and known enough to sell albums.

Wouldn't you would expect that he would have been, at he very least, highly impressed when he heard it considering he picked it as the lead single for his most valuable act? I would have suspected that having sold nearly 7 million albums, quite a few good songs were submitted from which he had to pick from.

If he heard it and thought "oh, that's a bit mediocre", I doubt he'd have chosen it as the lead. Indeed, many people seem very impressed by the song, perhaps explaining its surprisingly strong start on US itunes which has exceeded most expectations. Just because you might be underwhelmed by the song surely doesn't automatically mean that he (or anyone else) would share your opinion. Now while it is undoubtedly true that he would never admit any song was sh*t before its release, I don't think it takes great leaps of the imagination to think that he was genuinely impressed by the song.

(And compared to some people, 25 times isn't really that much!)

sadly quite a few won't though, they will just take it as a work of genius because 'simon says'

Remember, this is the man that predicted that Gareth Gates would be a huge global star and hailed Leon Jackson as the 'next Robbie Williams' just before his hugely underwhelming album was released.

He is king of the hyperbole - does anyone actually listen to him still?

How uncomfortable does she look in front of the camera / next to Simon??!

Re: Simon's comments- I completely agree with the OP ...it's a fine song but I'm sorry- there's no way he thinks it's THAT good.
