When the judges comment on there being chemistry between a pair of dancers I just wandered what this is.

Niaive perhaps, but I would read it to mean that there is potential romance, they make a sexy couple or somesuch because I can't decide what else this could mean.

I also don't think it is something you can fabricate or is it ? Do you have chemistry whether you try to or not and can you create it if it isn't there in the beginning ?

Can someone else enlighten me or give me another interpretation of "chemistry" in a dancing couple context ?

A strong, trusting relationship with your partner that demonstrates how in tune you are with each other when you dance. I think if you have chemistry when you dance, you'll never perform a duff routine because you'll know how to overcome it together. Add to this personalities that match and play off each other - I think that's chemistry. Just my view, not saying it's set in stone at all!

I think you gave a good answer. IMO, two couples with good chemistry were Alesha and Matthew and Tom and Camilla. I think it contributed towards them winning.

I dont know about chemistry but what goes on with some of the dancers on this show, on reading about them, most seem to chop and change romantic partners like a new dress.

Chemistry is when both dancers are like one. They have perfect understanding of each other's moves, where to be on the dance floor. I guess a bit of sexual chemistry helps too when selling the Latin up-tempo dance routines. Think of John Sergeant. He had it.

I understood what Craig meant when he said there seemed to be no chemistry between Ricky and Erin. At the end of the dance he didin't smile or look at her. It spoiled it, I thought. But hopefully it was just sheer terror on his part, and he'll relax in future.

think the lot of them were very uptight and no wonder, its a lot to do in front of millions especially if you mess up.. being on the same wavelength must help though when the teacher is trying to show them steps.

It's unlikely any celeb will have any chemistry with their partner so early on in the show. Week one - bit too soon to expect much chemistry. Nerves will come before that but given a few weeks when the nerves go I'm sure some partnerships will gel and the marks will be good.

I think Craig is asking a bit much to expect a display of chemistry in a first dance.

I agree and with some of them like Ricky and Maybe Joe you could see they were focusing so hard on getting the steps right and forgot about performance.

As for chemistry, clearly Ali and Brian has it (though it's clear they are not 'romantically' involved that way).

It also appears Chris has it with Ola. Though Ola got Kenny far in the competition in the previous series, I don't see the chemistry in them at all...

Chemistry. Hmm, my take would be that you feel they are connected in the dance, and all the little moves and interaction between them is apparent: the tilt in their head positions, the knowing, calming glance in a ballroom and cheeky passes in latin, moving in unison and 'looking out for each other' when in hold.

If you feel they are dancing to themselves (as opposed to for each other), even though they may nail the technical side of the dance, it'll leave the audience feeling stone-cold.

They all tried hard last night,, but was angry at judges comments that were frivolous like, praising some saying , great moves, then saying NOT when the couple were believing they were getting praise from the judge, I didnt like this.

Chemistry is simply how they interact.

If they complement each other, have a natural spark together, seem to get on... It's not necessarily anything to do with romance at all imo.

Many couples have had fabulous chemistry without there being anything more to it (Jodie and Ian, Aled and Lilia. Matt and Alesha, Austin and Erin, Karen and Bill...)

I believe that, partnership which is in tune with each other, their personalities match or compliment each other... so dance as one..

I thought Brian was acting a wee bit smitten in the training video.

If they seem to interact and 'feed' off each other during the dance.

Mark and Karen, Matt and Flavia, Rachel and Vincent, Matthew and Alesha, were good examples in their latin dances.

Brian is too young for Ali. Not that Ali is old, mind you. She seems to exude that something that makes her 'untouchable' for the boy-man Brian.

Of course, Brian can drool and flirt all he wants, he's American after all.

Sometimes a couple just clicks, without having to try. There's an instant connection there.

That's what I call chemistry.

The only couple I spotted with immediate rapport were Chris and Ola.

Of course, chemistry can also develop over time as a couple feel more at ease with one another and form a bond.

Absolutely agree, it added so much to their dance last night too. I wonder who in the second group will have it, though I think it can be gained over time, not always instant!

It absolutely does not have to be romantic. Anton and Erin have wonderful chemistry but there's nought going on there!

The final 4 of series 5 all had great chemistry with each other IMO, last year I'd say Erin and Austin had the most, I liked Tom and Camilla but didn't see much chemistry there.

I guess you don't need it to be a good dance partnership but it helps!

Kristina and John Sergeant's ballroom (whether they were your cup of tea or not!) often reminded me of a father dancing with his daughter. It was a charming relationship they had.

And you're bang on the money regarding Tom and Camilla. The reason I never warmed to them was because I didn't detect any chemistry between them.

I'll be intrigued to see which couples have the best partnerships next week. This week has been full of surprises, so who knows.
