After several days research on SIP clients on symbian mobile phones, I post the results here. Wish this is helpful for some SIP users

(1)For symbian users, there is only one built-in SIP client, which was developed by Nokia. Only some Nokia mobile phones (not all) were built this native SIP client in their Firmware. It is impossible to install this client by users at all. You can see the following link for the mobile phones with this built-in SIP client

http://www.forum.nokia.com/Technolog..._devices.xhtml

(2) The built-in SIP client means that users can dial number directly in their Phonebook for SIP call (Internet Call). There is no need to open the client for SIP call. For how to use this built-in SIP client, you can search google by "Nokia SIP Settings"

(3) There are some other SIP clients such as Fring to support SIP function on Symbian system. As I know, Fring maybe the best SIP client for the symbian users without Nokia built-in SIP client. But there is still problem, Fring will route your SIP connection to some their own servers first, then to your specified SIP server for connection, which low down the quality of voice talking. I have tested Fring, comparing to the SIP from computer direct, the voice talking quality is noticeable lowed down, a little more latency, but it should be acceptable.

(5) I have tested talkonaut on my Samsung Symbian Phone (Symbian 3rd version), it seems that the talking quality of SIP call is much worse than Fring (often 1 or 2 seconds latency). But I just tried talkonaut once, I cannot tell you more on Talkonaut. If there is any users using talkonaut often, welcome you to post your opinion here.

(6) Gizmo is another choice, but it only provide SIP function for the mobile phone with Nokia built-in SIP client, which is not very useful. For the other mobile phones, it only provide callback service. Frankly speaking, call back service to Mobile phone is totally useless in UK, becuase, you will be charged around 10p/min for your mobile phone callback service and maybe 1p/min for your international call.

(7) Of course, there are lots of other clients available for users to make cheap international call, such as truphone (Cannot be installed on my phone), EQO (Call back service), Mig33 (No SIP function supported).

(8) What I am looking for is a native SIP client similiar to Nokia built-in SIP client for my Samusng symbian phone. I don't want a my SIP call to route to some other servers before it connected to my specified SIP provider server. I wish the SIP client should be developed just for SIP not including Skype, MSN, etc. I want the flexibility to register any SIP providers I choose. I wish some day I can find a desired native SIP client on my mobile phone.

Thanks.

I use my Nokia E71 to make calls using my sipgate.co.uk account via WiFi. works very well, but maintaing WiFi connection is a noticeable drain on the battery.

You are right, but if you just call out by SIP, this is not issue. Consider you make normal phone call, how much battery will be consumed.

But if you want to keep you SIP account online for call in, that is absolutely battery killer. As I know, Wifi is not the worse case, 3G connection may consume your battery more quickly.
