I have been with Orange for at least 7 years and am due to upgrade but the choice of phone is dire to say the least.

I was waiting for the Nokia N97 as having had a N82 for the past 13 months and it being a superb phone i was keen to bag a N97 but because orange have to brand everything with there dire software i was told that they couldnt get it to work, So that leaves me having to find £ 300 to buy one.

So does anyone know if orange are going to pull there socks up, it was bad enough they stopped the upgrade early at a cost policy and before anyone asks im with orange as they are one of 2 networks that i can get at home.

That is strange as when I went onto their site a couple weeks back they said that I can upgrade from December 23rd but any existing days would be added to the next contract.

Some networks allow you to upgrade through CPW. At least the phone is unlocked and unbranded.

The N97 is available on 3. If you don't get 3g coverage from them at home, you'll get 2.5g from their backup agreement with Orange. It's worth a thought!

I am no longer with Orange but certainly I used that route in the past to upgrade with them. As you say, the main advantage being they supply a completely unbranded / unlocked handset.

You can upgrade in the last three months of your contract, those months will be added to your next contract, and you can get the Nokia N97 at the Carphone Warehouse.

If you set up an account on Orange's website then it will tell you what date you may upgrade.

Errr no. I think you'll find the reason Orange don't stock it, is that the Nokia N97 is a "Fault in a Box (TM)", and if the amount of people and dealers complaining about it won't dissuade you, go ahead and buy one, and I'll await the "My Nokia N97 is sh*t" thread in about 3 months time.

I thought the thing with the Orange network wasn't just the "branding" but also the fact that they had to mess about with the technology of phones to get them to work on their network coz they used a different frequency or something... certainly, when I've used unlocked, non-Orange, phones on Orange I've noticed reception to be choppy compared to Orange specific phones plus battery seems to drain quicker

Thanks for all that, Very interesting reading and turns out im not due a upgrade till nov 11th so will keep my eyes open on the topic of the N97 and see if they improve.

Still at least they got the N82 right as mine is 98% ok apart from the new feature its now aquired of losing the dialled call lists now.

7 years is a long time. I personally dont think its worth staying with a mobile phone company that long as they seem to offer new customers better deals than to those existing customers.

I strongly believe in joining a different provider at the end of each contract.

How does this CPW thing work- can you still get a deal? I hate their branding and would love to get a phone that hasn't been Oranged-up!

I'm waiting for the SE Satio and hope it will be available on Orange.

Simply a case of walking in off the street and telling them you are on Orange and are due an upgrade. They will take care of contacting Orange etc and, if a phone is available on Orange, they should be able to supply it ... albeit from their stocks which are unbranded and unlocked. That's certainly how I have done it in the past and cannot imagine it is any different now.

That's what I try and do. Although, I will never return to T-Mobile.

I dunno about that... I've been with Orange for over 7 years and get 2 loyalty discounts (totalling £15 off my tariff), unlimited texts on a tariff that doesn't include them (initially). At the start of this contract they matched what I could've got on O2 with regards to downloads (told them it would be a free bolt-on) plus I've never had to pay for an upgrade handset yet. Over the past 18 months I've rarely gone over my allowance but I've had a couple of business trips that included phone calls from abroad but nothing massive...

I think it's about hitting retentions at the right time... always retentions, never upgrades, and always having done my homework regarding what I can get elsewhere... and then spin it a bit

OK ta- can you still negotiate a deal on tariffs, etc, or don't they do that?

If you want to do anything other than continue your existing deal or switch to another of the standard Orange tariffs then I suspect you will be out of luck and would need to deal with Orange directly (which would, of course, end up with you receiving an Orange branded handset).

If anyone else knows differently feel free to correct me.
