I just watched the VMAs for the first time, and realised something weird. Why do the artists receive awards for the music videos? Why are the directors nowhere to be seen?

Take Britney Spears' Womanizer for example. Britney Spears did absolutely nothing to contribute to that video. She turned up on the day to lip sync and that was it. The director came up with the concept, actually executed on the concept, and is much more deserving of a "music video award" than her.

It's like Slumdog Millionaire winning an Oscar and then Dev Patel going onstage to accept the award rather than Danny Boyle. It's not his movie, so why he is thanking his fans and family, etc?

But of course, this being MTV, I forgot that it's a popularity contest, and not a legitimate award ceremony. Oh well.

probably because the majority of mtv viewers would not recognise the videos' directors, nor would they give a stuff about them compared to the videos' stars.
