Hi

I'm asking this out of curiousity more than anything else. Why do some channels have logos in the corners of our TV screens? We know what channel were watching, surely we don't need a logo to remind us of that?

Thanks

Baz

I don't know ALL the reasons, but one would be a a way of making it less 'attractive' to record a whole series from the tv, and indeed impossible then to 'sell' it as a pirated copy.

The various channels do it because they think it makes viewers associate programmes with the channel and therefore more likely to come back.

If you complain to any of them, you get a pretty standard email along the lines of "In a competitive multi-channel environment, it is important that the viewer is able to navigate easily..." or some other such bull. This despite the fact that every STB and IDTV has a perfectly good EPG.

Generally known as 'DOG's

do a search on that , and you'll find viewers are mostly against them but broadcasters insist viewers are mindless morons who couldn't find their own a*se with both hands

You are right. It's a watermark to discourage people passing work off as their own.

Cartoonstock use them:

Rubbish, its TV channels following the pack. If you ask them they give the standard stock reply that it is to help viewers - they just ignore complaints that pressing the select or OK button on the remote gives the viewer the channel details if they have forgotten.

Latest irritation from Channel 5 and a few others (but made really annoying by five) is what they call IPP (In Programme Pointers) where they invade up to a quarter of the screen (not including the DOG) to tell you what is on next.

They can never justify why they feel no need to put these on Skys subscription movie channels.

It would be nice if they would come to a compromise with viewers and have a small logo in one corner of the screen which is transparent to about 30-40%.

Large logos, colour and animations are really annoying.

I wasn't asking you if it is a watermark, I was telling you that it is a watermark.

I admit that something like a 70% transparent logo will do, and some currents logos are a pain in the ass, like ITV2[+]
They are almost as annoying as the midget that comes on at night to do sign-language. In this day and age, they should make it so that you can select and/or unselect the sign language.

And particularly so when the action is taking place behind them.

Channel 5 was the first terrestrial "DOG" and is the main reason why I virtually never watch the channel. It alienated me so much that I never bothered trying to endure their programming. Once I had Sky I became more accustomed to the DOGs (like a pain in the ass you get used to it eventually!) but rarely think of looking at what is on 5.

They used to some years ago, but I think they had an influx of complaints.

if you must have one BBC-HD is an example of an inoffensive one, to my mind
