I guess more than me saw it, but on Channel 4, they had "The Ultimate Pop Star " tonight, which was the top 50 of the biggest selling popstars/groups, according to single sales.

The Rolling Stones and David Bowie made the top ten, then we got down to the final 5! *building excitement (almost)*

5. Elton John!
4. Madonna!
3. Elvis!
2. The Beatles!

Who could have beat all of those I wondered?!?!? I couldn't think, I bet you can't either. Who could have beat even The Beatles? Who? Who? I hear you cry (work with me here )

Scroll down to find out

Nearly there

Cliff bl**dy Richard!

God, I didn't know whether to laugh or cry (laugh mainly, after swearing). Cliff seemed as surprised as everyone else. God, how sad is that.

That's a bit unfair of you I think.

I am personally totally uninterested and unmoved by Cliff Richard's music, but he was arguably Britain's first proper pop star and has maintained a huge and loyal following.

And I'm at least quite pleased that the top spot went to a Brit.

I remember Cliff's early number one hit "Living Doll" from a family holiday in the long hot summer of 1959
He managed to beat the Beatles by a wafer thin 169,474 after recording and releasing singles for nearly 50 years - and well done to him! Elvis was a further 1.5 million back and Madonna 5 million behind that.

But The Beatles recorded together for only 7 years! How amazing is that? It will only take one well planned and well timed single release by their record Company to regain top spot. Perhaps a maxi single with some historic video on it.

Yep, Cliff's performance is amazing (20,969,006 UK single sales) but The Beatles performance given their short recording career is absolutely mind bogglingly staggering!

So true. and this was just singles sales. I wonder who''d be top if they took album sales into account?.

If this was based on worldwide sales then Cliff would have been lucky to have made it into the top ten.

Cliff releases a new record every Christmas so his lead is going to increase every year until no one else can catch up.

Albums, OK but I wonder where EP sales would be included? I can imagine that they might be "accidentally" ignored altogether. I see vinyl EPs as being equivalent to the modern day CD maxi single (i.e. the high price single) so they would better fit with single sales.

So, were EP sales included in the programme? If not, I think the Beatles would easily exceed Cliff's sales as they issued several EPs and at least one of them got to number 2 in the single charts. It wouldn't surprise me if they deliberately left out EPs to create the shock factor of Cliff winning. Hmmm, I wonder...

In those days singles sold so much more than albums, that albums themselves appeared in the 'singles' charts if they sold enough. Weird thinking that if that happned now, there wouldnt be any singles in the top ten. lol

That list was copied from Sky News.

I *do wish* people would credit the source when copying and pasting stuff like that (I know it wasn't you, Stephen!)

Get a life TOML It's about the musical talent and success that has been awarded here, not what the guy does in the privacy of his own home

I would have expected Elvis to top the chart, but I think it is good that a british artist did.

Hi,

For those of you saying about the EP chart, I honestly doubt if the beatles would have beaten Cliff on that score.

Cliff released 46 EP hits which includes 4 number ones. This is far more EP's than any other artist, not to mention CLiff was around at the start of EP production, unlike the Beatles.

Also for those of you who doubt Cliffs worldwide position in the top 50, I can tell you that he is positioned at number 4 with over 260 million record sales. Which is totally amazing considering he is realtively unknown in America ( the biggest market)

Cliff totally deserved his position on that list, he has contributed more to British music than any other artist, and is still one of the most popular artists in the world today (excluding america).

Hi

Being a big Cliff fan, I was very proud that he was no. 1. He works so hard to get his singles played and they still somehow manage to get into the top 10 (last single in Dec No. 5), despite little or no airplay. He continues to top most charts, including last week's, selling more concert tickets than anyone. There is such a demand for tickets, that some fans have to queue for two weeks to ensure they get theirs.

He is on stage for a good 2 1/2 hours if not more at his concerts, whereas some artists manage one hour shows. Like he said in the programme "not bad for someone of 63".

Cliff really deserves this no. 1 spot. He has worked very hard, and has put up with some rotten treatment from djs and journalists along the way. Basically, he is no.1 because people like his records and that is why they buy them. No. 1 singles in 5 decades and sure to be 6 decades very soon. There is no one to touch his success.

Absolutely wonderful news, at last Cliff has some of the recognition he so richly deserves, he is a British icon that has just given and given to the industry with very little thanks and appreciation. Congratulation Cliff it couldn't have gone to a better entertainer but most of us have known for a long time that you are # 1. Kind regards, Ann.

Forty six EPs? Four EP number ones? In the Singles chart? LOL!!! You obviously don't know what an EP is (was). If you are sure about this, name the EPs and/or provide an internet link to the list [waits for the roar of deafening silence]

Hint: EP (Extended Play single) is not to be confused with LP (Long Play = Album). I say again, if EPs were included, The Beatles would probably have won. But they weren't.

And I like Cliff, too, he's OK!
