Reliable DVD/DivX/Xvid Player
Hi All,
Well the missus' DVD player (as I found out) refuses to read "backed up" DVDs. This is no good. So I want to get her a new one that plays AVI's too.I seem to recall going into Asda/Tesco earlier this year and they had a pile of DVD players that I'm pretty sure said DivX/MPEG/XVid for £20, what's more they were a good make like Pioneer or Panasonic, I specifically remember that. Does anyone know what make/model it would have been, or can recommend one? I want to pay about 20-50 quid, and these are my main requirements: - Not too fussed about upscaling/HDMI - Must have SCART out (to fit existing setup) - Be able to play anything thrown at it, DivX, AVI, Xvid, etc. - Be able to play any media CD/DVD/CDR/DVDR/W+/-/etc. - Have few/no video/audio/lipsync problems. So I suppose I'm after a mature SD player, that works with anything. She won't be best pleased if her 'replacement' player has more problems than her old one! I looked at Oppo ones but they seem rare in this country, or possibly Philips or Toshiba? Any advice appreciated! Rob |

Thanks for all the responses, think I'll stick to AVForums from now on, they seem a lot more knowledgeable and helpful in there!
![]() In case anyone finds this thread in the future wanting a good cheap DVD/DivX player, I opted for the LG DVX492, £48 from Tesco, plays all formats and also has USB 2.0. |

Seems I'm a bit too late but.....
They (tesco) also have/had the Toshiba ones (sd185) which handle divx/xvid ok for £26, well thats what I got it for No usb connection though although is poss they have dropped that one in favor of the upscaling hdmi version which was nearer £40 |

Cheers Chris,
Yer I think like you say they'd rather move upscaling ones and make £8 profit than normal ones that make £4 or whatever. ![]() Upscaling I don't need but if she ever gets a HDTV it'll be future proof, like the idea of USB though saves burning loads of discs. |

The only advantage is that modern TV's don't have many SCART sockets, so having HDMI gives you an extra connection option. |
