Onkyo TX-SR607 Upscaling
Hi
I'm looking at buying a Onkyo TX-SR607. Will it upscale the picture quality on the following to 1080i? Non Virgin HD channels Freesat/Freeview Nintendo Wii Thanks Baz |

According to the specs the 607 will upscale to 1080p via HDMI.
It will do HDMI upscale to 1080i from component/composite video. The V+ box upscales SD to 720p/1080i via HDMI depending on which setting used. Pretty sure Freesat boxes upscale to 1080i. Freeview boxes won't upscale unless they have HDMI. The Onkyo should upscale Wii to 1080 via component -> HDMI. You may find the V+ box does a better job than the Onkyo, or the Onkyo does a better job than the Freesat box - All you can do is try each box to find out which has the best scaler |

Will the picture still be upscaled to 1080i even though its built in? Baz |

Baz You should realise that upscaling means fitting the input signal to the screen size, if the TV has more pixels than the input then the TV has to upscale, upscaling is NOT a magic process that improves the picture despite the marketing. Whether upscaling an image before it is input to the TV is better than letting the TV do it depends on whether the external device or the TV has the better upscaler. |

Yes - the TV will be doing the upscaling.
Aren't the V10's 1080p? Yeah the V10's r full HD 1080p, the Freesat doesnt look upscaled lol. If it was upscaled surely the picture quality would be as good as Virgin or Sky HD? Baz |

If it wasn't upscaled you would see the full picture in only a quarter of the screen.

Baz If you spend thousands on an external video processor you will get very good results otherwise at the most you will get a small improvement over what your TV manages - it may even be worse. (Even with an expensive video processor it still depends a lot on the source material and a lot of satellite and Freeview stuff is poor to start with). |

Baz As for trying a better scaler there's no way as the freesat unit is built in to the set. Have you tried various user settings, it takes time to get the correct settings where you get the best out of the TV. I thought Panasonic were supposed to give excellent PQ for SD, if not excellent very acceptable, something doesn't sound quite right. |

Baz if you go on AV forums there is almost certainly a thread devoted to your TV in which several posts will give recommended picture settings - what is best is what you judge it to be but they will give a good starting point. |

Hi
I just assumed that if the amp upscaled to 1080i or 1080p the picture quality would be almost blu ray quality. Baz |

You can't magic more video detail out of thin air.
