Hi Folks,

What are your opinions of the Android OS ?

How would you compare it to other mobile systems ?

Would you say that Android is the way forward ?

Which Android handset do you own & what are your likes & dislikes ?

Many Thanks

DJM

I will also be interested in what others think, for much the same reasons

Because it is open source, and Google have money to spare awarding developers for the apps ... I think it will be huge.

I was initially looking at the Magic but then at the Hero too ... however, I understand that within the next month or two, new models are coming out

I used to have the G1 - awful handset but Android was good, loads of potential.

Yes Sony Ericsson are releasing the X3 Rachel which will have a 8mp camera with vga capture, this is the first Android handset that has these features.

I was thinking of getting the Hero or Galaxy originally, but sadly these only have the shoddy dated qvga capture

I must admit that the Motorola DEXT looks quite nice

I adore my Hero partly because of the beautiful and intuitive interface. I tried the basic android interface and hated it - but then again im a fan of gloss and customisation...the basic OS didnt tick my boxes. That reason is why I was never tempted by android until the Hero came along and now id be lost without it. I find it snappy and easy to adjust to my needs, something that I had problems with in previous handsets because the customisation is limited. I suggest you trial run an android handset and see if it meets your needs

I have a magic and hero. Love them both. As it stands I can't see a time ill own a handset now not running Android.

The Android OS is brilliant, very easy to use and so customizable that it seems to please both casual users who like the look of the phone and those of us who spend time in message boards playing around with it to get the best out of it.

I have the Hero, it's a great phone, few teething problems still but it is just out so I kinda expected a few but an update is out (Except T-mobile!) so once I get it, I hear all the problems disappear which will make it even better.

Another satisfied Android user here on HTC Hero. Fast, slick, versatile and completely customisable.

As long as it stays open source there is limitless potential.

I'd certainly say it's the way forward, but it isn't perfect at the moment.

The apps are generally good, but it obviously isn't as advanced as the quality and number of apps which the iPhone has. I'm sure this will improve over time as more users and developers end up using Android.

Some features are missing, such as decent bluetooth support. Hopefully Google will fully implement it in future versions of Android, but until then you may find Android phones slightly restrictive compared to older handsets which have supported these features for years.

So which mobile OS's will dominate the market and which will disappear.

Dominate:

1. Apple OS 10 Mobile
2. Android
3. Backberry, Research in Motion OS

Disappear.
1. Windows Mobile
2. Symbian
3. Palm OS
4. Linux LiMo
5. In house smart phone OS

Any one have a different opinion on those that stay and go or can think of any other mobile OS's.

I dont think Windows Mobile will disappear anytime soon. Its still a well loved platform and is about to get a bit of a refurb with WM7. That will be the decider!

Isn't it mainly Nokia that's sticking with it. I assumed it was an OS that wasn't really written for smart phones and has just been upgraded.

Symbian is what Nokia uses for its smartphones.
