you need to jailbreak and then unlock.

iclarified is the best place to go for tutorials:

You aren't screwed but you will need to do a bit of reading up on how to jailbreak and unlock.

Since your phone is on 2.2.1 I am assuming that it is either an original iPhone or an iPhone 3G (i.e. not the new 3GS). The good news is that either of these can already be jailbroken with the new 3.1 firmware, but (currently at least) only if you are using a Mac - and you *must* follow the instructions for doing so carefully so you don't update the baseband (the part of the OS that deals with the phone side of things and which is the bit that gets unlocked to use other networks) - so do not update to 3.1 with iTunes as this will upload Apple's new baseband to your phone which cannot be unlocked (at least not yet anyway).

If you use a PC then you can either wait for the iphone-dev team to release their tools for PC (hopefully won't be too much longer), or jailbreak your iPhone with the 3.0 or 3.0.1 firmware instead.

As mentioned above, the iClarified site has good walkthrough guides for you to use - but make sure you are using the correct one for your specific iPhone, iPhone OS, and computer type.
