Dizzee Rascal - Tongue n Cheek isn't actually as bad as I thought it would be...
After some incredibly dull lyrics in singles such as "Dance Wiv Me" "Bonkers" and "Holiday" I thought his introspective outlook was long gone but this is a decent "post fame" album. Don't get me wrong its still not as good as "Boy In Da Corner" "Showtime" and "Maths+English" and he's still a sell out but he's just about redeemed himself because he hasn't lost his flow.

i'm unlikely to be buying this album, but i was still curious as to whether it would contain many songs like the last 3 singles, or more of the older more original kind of stuff.
i did think Dance Wiv Me was brilliant - as a one-off - but i've got bored of all this new Dizzee stuff by now, and Radio 1's never-ending airplay and promotion of him. his earlier stuff was what set him apart from others in his field, but i kinda feel he has lost that uniqueness with the new stuff. although i suppose it's up to the man himself what he wants to do. but if the rest of the new album is still good then that's cool

It seems to me that Dizzee wants to move his sound "forward". What is evident to me and also very refreshing is that every album has a different "sound" to it. The progression and change between Boy In Da Corner and Showtime is not a massive leap but it's there. Maths+English had a lot of beats that were almost rock-like and was certainly a heavier sound and now Dizzee has moved on to more of a "dance music" sound.
I love Dance Wiv Me, Bonkers and Holiday. Tongue N Cheek is not full of tracks like those however it is overall a very catchy feelgood album. It's a party starter. I think it would be unfair and actually impossible to compare it to his first album as they are so very different. I think that Dizzee does his own thing with regards to the music he wants to put out and that's what makes him so great. |

^^ but at the same time its obvious that he wants to be a celebrity now which is ironic because in one of his first songs he says "being a celebrity don't mean shit to me" but obviously he's decided to make music that caters for the masses in order to make money and achieve this celebrity status, good luck to him tho, he's enjoying himself but there's no doubt that he's dumbed down his sound and lost a great deal of creativity and innovation in the process. with that said Its still a fairly good album

Its not a bad album, I agree, I also agree with the 7/10 score.
I have a mixed view on the singles aswell, I love Holiday, dislike Bonkers and dont have any real opinion on Dance Wiv Me. Solid album. |
