I think, more than ever, we are polluted by trashy, throwaway music. Even cheery pop tries to be serious but is just crap.
At the moment I hold little hope for the UK music scene. It's all generic indie, bad pop and dance music which verges on cheese (but people pretend it's serious). Music, or be it popular music, doesn't mean anything any more. It's just... there. |

Having just spent the last hour listening to Ignore the Ignorant by the Cribs, and getting excited about seeing them tomorrow, I think its pretty clear that modern British music still has the potential to be absolutely excellent. There have been some brilliant bands this millenium.

There's still some good British music around, but there's definitely something lacking, the energy or spark. Tony Wilson once commented that every generation had it's own musical revolution, approximately every 13 years. But what have we had since acid house? We seem to be overdue a revolution.

I think the problem lies in programs like X factor. They produce instant success unlike in previous years when new stars had to trawl pubs and clubs and have some experience of working live. It's all about as many sales as possible in a short amount of time and then move on to the next big thing.

Not restricted to British music but this blog is one of the best music blogs out there. www.sexy-never-left.blogspot.com - it isn't one of those illegal downloadng sites, it just writes reviews of good albums and after the review it has a little audio player with some highlights on it. It always focuses on talent though so about 90% of the music on there, you will not have heard of before. It's a nice change from the popjustice type sites who go on about how amazing A. Burke is and rave about absolute drivel.

Pop music in the second half of this decade has been dire, well, in my opinion it has anyway.

yay, another one of these threads. it depends which way you choose to look at it. if you compare music today to years gone by then you'll probably be disappointed, but we can't live in the past. i think i take a fairly relaxed view on how music is today. i like a lot of what's in the chart, ok, not much of it will be remembered after long but in that case i prefer to just enjoy things for the moment. of course some of it really is dire, but just be mature enough to ignore it and focus on what you do like instead, and you'll enjoy it more. well, i do anyway. i'm not saying i think everyone else should see it the same as me but i much prefer that rather than just wasting my time focusing on what's not good about music all the time.

IMO there is some great British music out there however the taste of the record buying public astounds me how bad it is - just one look at the charts confirms this.
For example Pearl Jam's new album Backspacer debuts at number 1 in the US, Australia and numerous other coutries and yet here Pete Andre sell more That to me says alot.

i think if you're not satisfied by the music you're being exposed to commercially, rather than sit around and complain about it, it's up to you to seek out the sort of music you do want to hear. it's being made, you just have to find it.

We have some good artists but overall I think British music is quite disappointing at the moment and has been for a while. With a few exceptions, it generally lacks ambition, creativity and originality imo.
Whilst I agree that there is good music to be found outside of the commercial/chart stuff, I don't really agree that it's British artists who are making the "amazing" or "great" music. IMO, Amercan indie/alternative/rock music, and their singer-songwriters, have pee'd on ours from a great height over the last decade. I don't say this with any joy, it's just the way I see/hear it. So I would say music is still good, despite the stuff in the charts, but British music is only "OK". |

Oh, of course the less popular markets are full of talent and great music but the problem is that popular music doesn't do anything any more. It has no meaning other than to sell. It's been like this in the past, of course, but I doubt we're ever going to see anyone big any more... perhaps for a short term (Muse, Coldplay etc) but I bet it'll be short lived in relation to how bands lasted in the past.
There's no movement... like someone said, Britpop was the last big thing and no one tries any more. It's all short term fame replaced with the same thing just by another act. |

^^ You can thank the likes of Simon Cowell and other like minded people for that. Simon doesn't give a sh*t about talent nor would he be able to recognise it if it ran him over in a tank, he just wants his wonga at the end of the day. No such thing as talent scouts or white label these days because they aren't looking for talent, they're looking for marketability. Or as Simon would say ''The X-Factor''

Your saying people like Leona, Duffy, Adele, Amy have not talent
I am not being funny but female artists have had nothing but praise for their songwriting and stunning voices over the years. |
