And that's the best you can come up with? Go back and look at some of the female vocalists of the eighties & nineties, they were MUCH better!

Duffy, Amy and Adele - three plastic soul sound-a-likes each as whiny and annoying as each other and a very poor karaoke version of Mariah Carey. What happened to originality and uniqueness?

i'd agree with amy winehouse being a good example of british talent from the 00's.

Amy, Duffy, Adele, Paloma Faith, Gabriella Cilmi... Give me a break, they all sound like clones of each other! And they all sound like KiKi Dee to me.

Alison Moyet, Annie Lennox, Mica Paris, Beverley Knight, Dina Carroll... These woman could then and still can now sing circles around the modern crop of imitators. Crop sized circles too. These artists come from an age of creativity and uniqueness, who wrote, arranged, composed, played some instruments, self devised harmonies. Literally were talented. This modern crop seem to team up with a producer, have all their songs written for them, arranged for them, the only thing they do seem to do is sing. Basically most of the people quoted are stage school nightmares.

The only one who has a somewhat decent voice from the list given is Leona Lewis. If only she'd stop trying to immitate Mariah Carey though, she does a very poor job of it. She has a really pleasant tone to her voice but she ruins it by being Simon's karaoke Mariah.

Pardon? Are you on drugs or something? Who is this ''we'' you speak of, the little men in your head?

Go and do a bit of growing up yourself and come back and shock yourself by writing something that makes sense.

Excuse me but I haven't got the foggiest who you are! Maybe you're mistaking me for someone else because you just accused me of being a ''Saturdays hater'' in another thread when I don't even know who the f*ck the Saturdays are. (though after listening to them, they should have called them the Sundays)

Have you actually reached your teens yet? You sound like an immature kid ''like lolz omg staurdays are amazing zonk''
''ur just jealous of them omg lolz grow up innit''

Bat For Lashes (Natasha Khan) is an underrated British talent that should be listened to by more people

To find the decent music right now you've got to stop listening to commercial radio and explore the underground scenes. There's a ton of interesting stuff going on under the radar right now.

This is absolutely correct, the areas i move around in(music festivals) has enabled me to discover vast amounts of talented original artists and bands

i gave up on the charts over a decade ago due to them force feeding listeners hyped music on the main radio stations.

Obviously British music isn't what it used to be. I agree about Bat for Lashes, she is really very good. I tend to listen to a lot of Bowie and The Cure; my favourites of British music. I am a big fan of Radiohead and Muse, who I think represent the creativity of British music today, and in my opinion are 2 of the best British bands around, and who will be considered so in years to come.

she is amazing

i also fail to see any link between the voices of adele, amy winehouse, duffy, etc. and ...kiki dee?

when i hear them, i hear three individual voices. with no hint of kiki dee to my ears.

I also agree that Bat For Lashes is amazing and very talented. She does more than just sing, too. Her albums are largely her own work, down to even the art work. She is the best thing in the UK at the moment, in my opinion. No one is better than her, except Skunk Anansie but they're hardly current (although they're back )

The majority of British music, the popular stuff, is shit. I cannot stand the likes od Duffy and Adele... and most of these singer/songwriters. They're just "in" at the moment, like indie kid bands were previously. As for Amy Winehouse... I am indifferent. I don't particularly like her but I can see why she's seen as being a talent.

The big bands, like Radiohead and Muse are talented (again, I don't particularly like them but I see their talents) but there's soooo many smaller bands who are complete crap but still get success (Razorlight, Kooks... and all those skinny tie wearing bands).

Don't know about Amy but Duffy and Adele certainly write the lyrics and top line melody for all their songs.

They can't compare with Kate Bush, Siouxsie Sioux, Annie Lennox etc who wrote their music (for several decades), not just sang what others put in front of them.

Watch this clip of Damien Rice and Lisa Hannigan from start to finish, and tell me there's no talent any more. I know they're Irish, but that's close enough to us to count.

Pretty sure all the artists mentioned also write their own stuff. Some work with other writers too - probably especially true in Leona's case.

What about Radiohead? Muse? Imogen Heap? The Prodigy? White Lies? Coldplay's last album was their best ever, and they're probably one of the biggest bands on the planet now.

It's all a matter of taste and age, I suppose. As people get older, it seems they invariably start complaining that new art is never as good as the old. Just nostalgia, I suppose.

amy has written all the lyrics for both her albums

i like 80s female singers as well, especially kate bush, but i like more modern singers too - it is possible to like both and not have this need to compare them and declare who i think is best. there are amazing, original female vocalists in all decades.

Gotta agree with much of what has been posted here. In the60s, 70s and 80s (and even into the 90s) we had a thriving music scene with a lot of variety.

In my opinion it is down to the music cartels. We used to have hundreds of smaller independent labels, many with artists who were not mainstream and didn't sell loads. Even the larger labels gave artists a chance, they would not base everything on the sale of the first or second album. These days the big labels own most of the smaller ones, the music cartels control radio playlists and if your first album isn't a huge hit you get dropped. As a result we have many artists who all sound similar. Alexandra Burke is just another Leona Lewis clone. Akon sounds like a hundred others, Duffy sounds like a hundred others, JLS sound like a hundred others, Girls Aloud sound like a hundred others etc. etc. etc.

There is still a lot of good music out there but you have to look hard to find it. In this way the internet is a good resource (and so is filesharing to some extent but that's another argument). Much of the best music around isn't going to be mainstream and isn't going to be in the charts. I believe the death of the big music labels would be very, very good for independent musicians, the surviving smaller labels and the diversity of British music generally.

Well I would have thought that Duffy's voice is unique, a lot of people like it and a lot think it is dreadful .... but you'd be hard put to confuse it with anyone else.
