Best Way To Connect?

Hi

My g/f has ordered a Panasonic V10 and an Onkyo 607, which will be getting delivered next month. She has a PS3, Virgin HD box, Panasonic BD80 Blu Ray player and a Nintendo Wii. The V10 has in built Freesat as well as Freeview. What's the best way to connect this all up so she can enjoy 5.1 surround?

Thanks

Baz

PS3 HDMI -> Onkyo HDMI
Bluray HDMI -> Onkyo HDMI
V+ HDMI-> Onkyo HDMI
Wii Component -> Onkyo Component (the 607 will do HDMI Video Upscaling to 1080i from Component so you could go this route if you wish)
HDMI Onkyo -> TV HDMI.

PS3 will need to be set to LPCM in the audio settings for HD audio.

No familiar with the BD player, if it has onboard decoding for HD audio then set to bitstream, if not LPCM.

Once you have got everything connected, speakers/external sources, you will need to run the 'auto setup' on the amp. Once this has been done you can then familiarise yourself with the amps settings.

Hi

Thanks for that, will I not need any optical cables to connect the TV, PS3 or Virgin HD box to the amp? I thought you had to connect optical cables for 5.1, unless I've been misinformed?

HDMI will supply multichannel audio for the PS3/BD player and V+.

What audio outputs has the TV - Freesat I'm assuming optical?

1xoptical from TV to Onkyo if this is the case, if not stereo outputs (phonos) if it has these.

Hi

Thx again, yeah the TV has an optical cable connection.

Thanks

Hi

Stupid question, where do I connect the Component AV Cable on the Nintendo Wii to the 607? Do I connect the green, blue, red cables to the component video in and the red and white to game in?

Thanks

Wii -> component in sounds right.

Game in? If this is an audio input (phono red/white) labelled 'Game' this sounds right too.

Hi

Below is a link to an image of the back of the Onkyo 607.

Component in/Game in will be the correct way to connect the Wii.

Hi

Does it matter which component in its connected to as one is cbl/sat and the other is dvd/bd?

The labels in brackets above the Component video sockets link them with the similarly labelled Composite Video and Audio Left/Right sockets, the group of yellow, red and white sockets.

So you can use the cbl/sat Component sockets for the video and the cbl/sat red and white sockets for the audio for example.

It does not matter as you will have to assign the component video input anyway if you want to use Game In audio inputs.

In the component video setup select either IN1 (CBL/SAT) or IN2 (DVD/BD) depending on which one you connect too for the input selector Game.

Then when you press Game on the remote the amp read out will say 'GAME' and will switch to component/analogue audio (Game In).

Hi

Currently my g/f has the standard red/white/yellow Nintendo Wii connection, would there be any real benefit buying a component lead with the green/blue/red/white/red connections?

I would say yes - Yellow refers to composite, this is at the bottom of the table in regards to video signals/picture quality, even though it's only 480p there should be a noticeable increase in picture quality if you were to connect via component.

You could even try the Onkyo's video conversion, this would convert component to HDMI, it would then upscale and output 1080i.

Worth a try, at least you'll know which is better at upscaling, the TV via component or Onkyo HDMI upconvert.
