Corrupted DVD?
I recently recorded on a DVD +RW but the recording failed and it has somehow managed to corrupt previous recorded programmes so they won't play but they are still showing on the DVD menu.
The recorded data is still there as i've managed to get the VTS files to play in sony vegas with video and audio with no problems, so why are they not playing on the DVD player? |

The likely explanation is a corrupt TOC (Table Of Contents). This tells a player where to find the audio/video data to play.
During the recording process the recorder creates a temporary TOC which most stand alone players can't find. However a recorder or a PC burner drive may well be able to locate the temporary TOC. When you Finalise a disk the temporary TOC is moved to the start of the disk where a player expects to find it. I suspect something happened to screw up this operation but left the temporary TOC behind. Which would certainly explain why a stand alone player might not be able to properly play the disk but a PC drive can. Not sure if there is a simple solution. if you have some DVD burning software then you could try finalising the disk with that and see if that makes it playable. |

I asked my DVD recorder to record a 30 minute programme but somehow it failed and only recorded 10 minutes but those 10 minutes didn't play at all.
When i went to watch the previous recordings i had done on there, they were now corrupt as well except for one where it gets to chapter 4 and misses chapters 5-9 and returns to the title menu. The rest of the DVD dosen't play at all. Would making another recording on this disk restore the table of contents? |

It is just as likely to not work as it is to work. And it might even make matters worse.
If the PC can read the data OK even on those recordings that cause problems on your player then I think the only real solution is to copy the stuff from the corrupt disk and burn it back to a new one. Just hoping in doing so that it recreates the TOC correctly. Not as if the disks are £1000 a pop is it?

Unfortunately, Roxio only finalises write once DVD's and not +RW DVD's.
