Michael jackson has died and many of the Beatles have to, Madonna is getting old and so is Mariah carey.

I dont see how music artists in the future could replace these legends, all of the singers these days have a couple of hits and then they disappear.

its nice to know that i will be able to say that i was alive when these legends were making music.

Its not like Madonna and Mariah Carey are on deaths door or something

Besides, every generation only remembers the very successful artists, they don't remember the people who disappeared. Im sure there were many acts during the 80s and the 70s that are barely remembered now!

Legends don't tend to be legends when they first start out- it takes time for people to see them that way. We'll have to hang about.

Britney Spears? Practically a house hold name, platinum albums, very succesful, tons of controversy and is still very young. Same with Eminem.

Enrique is fairly well known, too. Not a legend but alot people seem to know him.

So are the likes of Spears and Eminem going to be revered in decades to come, on the same level as names such as Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Jimi Hendrix, Buddy Holly, etc etc etc?

The thought of that sickens me.

In my eyes, a legend is someone who is a pioneer and has influenced many artists, not by how many records they have sold. Spice Girls are legends because they made it possible for British pop girl groups to have phenomenal success worldwide and have influenced many talented groups (Girls Aloud etc.) Beyonce may be a legend in decades to come, but I think Britney needs to up her game and improve a few things before she becomes a legend.

Madonna is getting old....

She's 51!
She's still churning out tracks that the public lap up, she's still releasing albums of brand new material, and she's just finished the highest grossing solo tour of any artist.

I think there's life in the old dog yet.

Likewise, Prince had the biggest grossing US tour of 2004 and his 21 night stint at the O2 in 2007 shows that you don't need constant chart hits for people to pay up just to see you perform.

Add to the mix Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, et al to show that these folks are more than capable of showing folks half their age how it should be done.

So no, there are still some true legends left in the music world to entertain us for at least the next decade or two.

Pearl Jam who have never been as popular here as they are in the US and elsewhere sold out the o2 in 17 minutes without a doubt to their fans they will be revered as legends particularly for the amazing live shows they put on.

There are tons of artists that will go done as legends AC/DC, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, REM, The Who and The Sex Pistols just a few that have undoubtedly influenced those coming after them.

Britney and Beyonce are the only ones that come to mind. Justin too if he gets his finger out, same with Christina, although she has something in the works so that's okay. Mainly Britney and Beyonce though.

Its hard these days, because singers are so helped by technology, you tend to think that anyone can be a singer these days, and pretty soon music will be manufactured I bet. And the record sales will never be attained with the internet and download, and burning of CD, you will never see the likes of MJ again. Obviously, nothing is for certain, I am just saying its gonna be hard to come by.

Definitely Beyonce.

I also feel and I don't particularly like their music, that Take That will be held in very high regard in the future.

Britney Spears IS a legend but not for her music. Which is unfortunate.

Beyonce for sure

She has everything and been on top since the nineties. She is a household name around the world. Money follows her from different directions as she is the richest celebrity under the age of 30. Respected highly by her collegues and the music industry also.

Beyonce isn't a legend, she's a marketing tool.

Any respect from her music industry collegues is due to the fact she's married to Jay-Z. I'll give her a moderate amount of praise for having the balls to slap her face on perfume bottles, attempt an acting career, and launch her own alter-ego (honey, you ain't fierce, sit down), but she lacks the back catalogue to be considered a legend, let alone credibility.

Let's see how she gets on in 10 years time.

And don't even get me started on folks naming Britney Spears.

Some women were going to give birth to the greatest musicians that we have ever, ever known, but they had abortions.

Have you never heard of Destiny's Child? Beyonce was on top long before Jay-Z entered the scene.

We've still got Tina too. She might be getting on but if her last tour was anything to go by she's got more life in her than Britney!

Beyonce did pretty well without Jay-Z if you ask me... Destiny's Child?
Her "back catalogue" goes back more than ten years.

Not to mention DreamGirls - if that was her attempt at an acting career it was a good one.

No-one's saying she's a legend right at this minute, but she will be.

After some thinking, I daresay these are the most popular/well known artists in the world right now.....

Beyonce
Christina
Britney
Robbie Williams
Kylie Minogue
Madonna
Mariah Carey
Eminem
Coldplay
Pink
Westlife
Nickelback
Oasis
Red Hot Chilli Peppers

^ Most of them are household names, they might not be seen as "legends" now but in about 10/15 years when people look back at the music industry of today, those will be the names that will be remembered. Maybe if GaGa sticks around she'll be up there as well.

I would say people will be talking about Beyonce in the same light as other generations spoke of Tina Turner and Aretha Franklin. Britney spears maybe not going to be remembered for her singing capabilities but she did bring to the fore some very good pop music.

As much as I think she has a brilliant voice - I agree! I've been saying that for a few years now, she is nothing but a marketing machine. That woman would stick her name on a bog-roll if the price was right. She just shamelessly endorses everything so papa knowles can make as much money as possible! It started to get ridiculous from the B-Day era onwards - there wasn't anything spectacular on that album, just a few catchy pop songs but she insisted on releasing it and re-releasing it, then doing a deluxe, then a super deluxe, then a spanish version... It was like ''f*ck off already woman and stop plugging that sh*t, old news''

Beyonce is the definition of Cash Cow!!!
