It depends on which tariff your mate is on; Original, Daily Bonus or Addict. IIRC:
Original charges 12p per text to other networks or 5p per text to Virgin mobiles.
Daily Bonus charges 10p per text (except texts 6-10 each day, which are free).
Addict charges 10p per text, outside any monthly text allowance.
