Hard Disk Upgrade
mjvolante
25-09-2009
Hi all,

I think it's about time I upgrade the HDD in my box.

I would appreciate some advice on what HDD to get. I want at least 1TB. Has anyone upgraded with a Western Digital or similar.

If you have do you have the actual HDD model number (as there are some many)..so I can trace it on the web.

** Just a thought, I do have a WD My Book 500GB attached to the Humax ....could I swap the HDD between the two units. That would give me 500GB ** but would rather have 1TB

Thanks

Simplest and easiest is just to get an external USB disk. You can then just transfer programes to it freeing up space on the internal drive

The 1TB Western Digital WD10EVDS is the one that many people on this forum recommend, it is specially designed for Video Streaming and HDR's.

I bought mine from CCL, but that was a few months ago, so I would expect there to be cheaper sources by now.

Presumably the external HD requires some sort of Unix partition in order to be able to do this? If so, what is the easiest one to create one? While I am PC savvy, I do not know much about Unix. Will hunt around for utilties myself.

Also, if I just go ahead and upgrade the HD to a 1 terabyte or something, could I copy everything from the existing HD to my external HD first, install and format the 1 terabyte drive and then copy everything back from the external drive all via the USB connection?

I was reading stuff about creating bootable Linux DVDs to be able to read drives etc. but I think that this would be a much easier way. Anyone tried?

I have never used an Hard Drive Drive with my FOXSAT. I just use a USB Drive to take stuff off. I then if I want to play it back on the TV just burn it to a DVD. Usually you can get several episodes of a series on one DVD. Nero Vision works fine for doing this.

Have a look at
http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/forums/s...d+disc+upgrade

I upgraded with a WD model WD10EVCS, and connected the 320GB to an USB to SATA adapter.
You can copy HD files to the 'main' drive but the other way round - it does take a bit of time though!!

I believe thing to do now is to put the new drive in, format it and then connect the old and the new dirve to your computer which is running UBANTU, and copy across.
With 1GB, I've never gone over 40%, and I do have several files permanently on

The Seagate 1TB pipeline drive is a larger capacity version of the drive that Humax use, and it has worked fine for me.
