Nokia maps for free
iRuss

If you want to use Nokia Maps for free, try this. Firstly your N-series will have to be unlocked.

Secondly get a PAYG sim card on any network as long as it's not 3.

Then get on to 3 to get them to send you a free PAYG sim. Make sure this and the other SIM are registered in your name.

On the original card, contact the network and ask for your PAC code. Once you've got it call up 3 with your other SIM and port the number over which will take about 2 days.

The trick is when you port a number to 3 they give you £10 credit for free.

Once all that's done, get the internet settings for 3 sent to your handset, put the SIM in and fire up Nokia Maps and buy the 30 day option for £6 which will come out of your £10 credit. Replace the 3 SIM with the SIM you normally use and it's done.

Keep repeating the whole thing every 30 days and the satnav won't cost you a penny.

3 don't seem to put a limit on how many times they'll allow this at an address, I've been doing this for 4 months now, using a new 3 sim card each time.

Is all that worth it for the tiny amount of data that A-GPS uses? Surely, your normal data bundle would cover it. Anyway, the turn by turn facility on Nokia Maps requires a paid for licence which is tied to the phone.

edit: Have I misunderstood your post? Because it occurs to me that you are talking about the licence being paid for from the credit. In which case the flaw is that you may have to top-up a certain amount before you can get your PAC. Secondly, the 3 Terms and Conditions place a limit on how many you can obtain. (I don't know whether they enforce it)

I think you've misunderstood what I'm saying.

I'm not on about about A-GPS data - I'm talking about using the free credit that 3 gives you in order to pay for the 30 day licence. As you say it's tied to the phone and not the sim card.

Also, I've just checked and all the networks have limits to the number of free SIMs issued. Also, there are other obstacles, eg. To activate an O2 account, you need to top up (£10minimum).

So it looks like there are limitations to this method of circumventing the charge.

I've got 11 free sims from 3, none of them have given me any problems and 4 of them have been used this way. If o2 say you have to top up use a different network then, it's not rocket science. I normally use Vodafone, they have no such restrictions.

I'm sure you've had 11 SIMs from Three, but there T&Cs say 2 per person and 5 per address. Also in your first post, you say to get a free SIM from any network except 3. When in fact, as I have pointed out, you are restricted to certain networks and then by the availability of PAC (subject to the rules of the MNP scheme).
Obviously it worked for you, but its not straightforward.

OK for some reason you're trying to make this sound more complicated than it needs to be. I have had more than 10 sim cards from 3, all of them registered to me at my address. If you (or anyone else) get trouble with this then simply use someone else's name or address with their consent. Seriously it's not rocket science.

Yes I said to get a sim from any network, if o2 make the charge you mention then obviously don't choose o2! They're the only network I know of who makes that charge.

Yes it works for me and this means it should work for anyone else who tries it as I've been doing it since May.

As I said, no need to make this anymore difficult than it already isn't.

I'm going to give it a go, ordered a dozen free sims tonight. I'll report back in a month or so...

Will be interesting to see how people get on. Does anyone remember the recent thread where a forum member was refused a PAC because he had joined the day before and the network hadn't recovered the subsidy? (Which is allowed by the MNP rules).

I'll have a search later on and post back.

I'm not trying to make it more complicated than it is iRuss, you make some bold statements in your first post. Not all of which are true. I suspect you've extrapolated from your experience and assumed the process would work for all networks.

I didn't order them all in one go - just do it once a month, that'll be enough for this to work.

lol I really don't know what your problem with me is. I've posted exactly what I've done in an attempt to help others. Maybe you're a little uncomfortable that you haven't managed to find a similar way to help others so you want to try and discredit those who have? Whatever it is why not just walk away from this thread and leave it for people to try.

All I've done is post a method that seems to work. There are no guarantees however I've done nothing different to what others can do so there's no reason why it shouldn't work for someone else.

iRuss, it's obviously working for you. If others cannot take your word then let them get on with it.

On a possibly similar note. I activated Nokia Maps at the beginning of August and got the 7 day free trial. That lapsed. In the meantime I have changed my phone. Same network (3) and number. I needed to use the Satnav function and went to purchase a 90 day licence. However I never got to the purchase screen to enter C/C details etc. But the programme activated anyway. I haven't had my latest bill from 3 to see if it got charged there.

It normally activates by sending premuim rate texts to onebill or whatever they're called, the company that collects revenue this way.

As I said several times, it obviously works for you, iRuss, I don't disbelieve you. Please don't personalise this.

All I've shown is that your original post doesn't tell the whole story. I feel I should help by warning other forum members of problems. If you feel that I have a problem with you, then I apologise wholeheartedly. I have always tried to help other forum members and am horrified that you think otherwise.

Really? Even though in your earlier post you say..

Quote:

Everything I've said in this thread is true - I know this because I've tried and tested it. It will work for others too until such times that 3 put an end to it.

This is an example of what I was talking about, I have already shown how this statement is not true. Its nothing personal, I'm merely trying to stop people being inconvenienced. I say again that I don't disbelieve you, you have found a particular combination that works, but I don't believe that a general case can be extrapolated.

However, comments about me being uncomfortable that I haven't found a way to help other members is speculation on your part and a personal remark. (Its also patently untrue, if you look at my posts over the last seven years)

I don't want this discussion to degenerate into a slanging match, so I shall leave it at that. Other than to hope you continue to enjoy Nokia Maps and others can combine our insights so that they may take advantage of this loophole before it is closed.

From what I have been told by Nokia the licence is tied to the SIM and not the phone. I test a lot of Nokia Handsets and my year licence follows me with each phone I put my SIM in. So i'm confused too as to how this works!

When you put a new sim in a phone which has previously had a licence it will ask if you want to tie the licence to the new sim card - it happens each time i use this method.

Yes.. you're correct, I play with lots of new phones, but not new SIMs - I do recall seeing a similar message though
