I am using the iPhone 3G 16GB with the 3.0 OS firmware. It has been jailbroken but there are some problems.

The problems:

Cannot send or receive MMS.
No option or button for Internet Tethering appearing under Network in settings.

The iPhone is a PAYG one but using a pay monthly SIM.

Other information I can provide is the O2 Carrier settings file is currently 4.0.

The version of 3.0 firmware is (7A341).

I've tried sending MMS to 1010 and I just get the message saying that they will set me up soon. There is no picture message to follow like I know there should be.

With the iPhone being jailbroken, I've removed apps such as Make It Mine as I had read that the change of carrier name could cause some issue, I had a GPRS icon to replace the circular symbol that would otherwise appear there.

I've minimised customisations made using Winterboard as well just to be sure that no customisations are causing a problem.

I have checked my settings for MMS and all appears to be correct. My internet access on GPRS/EDGE/3G has always been fine with the phone.

As much as I know now, I have two or three options and they appear to be, download the carrier settings for tethering from that site you can find through google then go visit on the phone, download new carrier file through itunes or reset network settings.

I don't want to lose Wi-Fi settings though if I can help it. I have static IP's configured for a few connections to wireless networks and then there are some networks that I have been given password for but would not remember them now.

If I update with the official carrier file, I understand that I cannot revert back to the old file or get the customised tethering option later.

Anyone on here experienced MMS problems with the 3.0 firmware? Help getting MMS working again would be much appreciated. I also understand that there are other applications that can deal with MMS but really, I just want the existing SMS/MMS app to work as it should.

Thanks in advance.

When you say you've checked the MMS settings are you sure you know what they should be? As you are using PAYG it will be different settings than the iPhone defaults. See here for details (apologies if this is already what you checked against). If you set up tethering using a custom settings file then try disabling it in the setings menu (the tethering option will actually remain even if you delete the custom file).

Thanks for that. Checked settings again and found that idata.o2.co.uk was there instead of wap.o2.co.uk under the MMS settings. That has solved the MMS issue, thanks. I feel quite stupid now but I seem to remember some time ago that when I once switched the phone on some settings were lost and no idea of how that occured. I can only think that that particular setting was not saved or reverted back to the original settings. It did work when I first installed the firmware.

Anyway, that particular problem is solved. No need for me to update the carrier settings or try the tethering options now I guess. Main thing for me was getting the MMS working again.

Still wondering why there is no Internet Tethering option under Network Settings though. Could that have anything to do with the existing carrier file? I cannot think why the button is not present. A friend of mine is on the same firmware and also on same carrier file and his iPhone displays the button.

In theory the tethering option has to be activated by O2 (you are supposed to have an additional bolt on to use it), and the button will appear when they do so. However some people discovered that you could actually unlock the option using custom carrier files, and for a while there was a wapsite that allowed you to download and install them. Once that was done you could use the tethering option without having to pay the expensive bolton cost. Doing so was risky though as in theory O2 could have cut your connection off as a breach of contract, or charged you for the data - though the jury was out on whether it was technically possible for O2 to tell whether you were tethering or not (unless you were using massive amounts of bandwidth which would only be possible with tethering).

I believe firmware 3.1 has disabled that backdoor though so you have to activate tethering officially now.

Glad you've got your MMS working though.

If I were to download that modified carrier file, would the internet tethering option then appear under network settings? I'm led to believe that OS 3.0 should actually feature the Internet Tethering button whether you have the bolt-on or not.

My dad has 3.0.1 on his 3GS and the Internet Tethering option is there. When you click on that button it takes you to a website with more information about the internet tethering.

Just wondering whether updating with the modified file could make the tethering option appear on my phone. At the moment, I am not sure about taking that risk as I now have MMS working and internet has always been fine with my phone. I cannot really miss something I haven't had like with tethering. I have PDAnet and some other application that is supposed to allow tethering anyway though I've not looked into that yet.
