80's Groups - Why do some sound so dated today, whilst others still fresh & relevant?

I'd agree wholeheartedly with that. Interestingly, many of the acts namechecked on this thread so far were heavily influenced by Roxy Music. Anyone familiar with their first five albums (1972 - 1975) will know what I mean. Of course they then went on to produce some early 80s classics of their own

actually i dont agree, i cant think of 1 of my beloved 60's tracks or 70's tracks that doesnt sound dated... not that thats a bad thing mind. i dont think synths were any more over used then the bog standard 4 man guitar group plus drums... thats still going.

i dont think that theres any difference with any style of music, the classic (often early tracks) from a new sound (guitars or synths) will stand out as classics whilst the later tracks are usually watered down versions of earlier works.

i still love 'fade to grey', 'sound of the crowd', 'the model' but find it hard to like later synth pop. in the same way i prefer earlier mid 60's guitar music to later 60's guitar music.
