Right, what i'm trying to do is connect an NTL cable box to a surround sound amp for glorious prologicness. Simple i hear you sigh...

NTL box is irish and has no phonos, no problem i hear you say. Well it also has only one scart.

So clearly i need a scart with an audio break out. problem is i can't find one.

So i was looking on maplin.co.uk, as good a place as any to start yes???

I found this now you will notice that this is a 'break into' connector with the phonos connected to the input pins.

But my question is this. If i were to put this on the TV end of the scart can anyone think of a reason why it would not work as a break out connector?

Thanks

I can see no reason why it won't work as you envisage, but you can get cables with Scart at one end and Phono plugs at the other from Index. Using an extra connection MAY degrade your signal.

This would be more suitable as it is switchable. Similar item cheaper at CPC though

I should correct my statement above, obviously it depends on which Scart pins are connected to the Phono plugs.

Fred Smith that's the one, couldn't find it, i don't like the maplin site. what did you search for?

Just scart to phone would be no good as i need to preserve the scart signal.

What you can do is buy a scart splitter box, and connect the phono sockets on the scart splitter to your surround sound system.

That way then, anything that is going through the splitter, will work through surrond sound. Hence, A(video), b(Sky/Ntl), c(dvd or Ps2/Xbox or similar).

My old scart splitter simply got 2 scarts from one. But I did once see a more advanced version which did same, but also had extra audio L + R phono output - on the splitter box. You could connect them via a cheap phono-phono cable to the hifi, while leaving the scart intact. Maybe it was Argo's - i cant remember.

Both those pieces of kit will work but you will only be getting composite video and not RGB out of your box. I would suggest the best way to do what you want is to make your own.

Buy a regular scart cable, and a regular phono cable (Red and White Audio),
First, Chop the end off the Audio cable and seperate the wires out,
Open up the Scart connector and wire the audio cables to the audio pins in the scart connector with a soldering iron not forgetting to wire up the ground signals as well.
This way, you will get the best quality video signal (i.e RGB and not composite only) and you will have the Left & Right Audio for your Hifi.

( The only tricky part is figuring out which pins in the scart connector to use as there is both audio in and out (L&R). you want either the audio out pins nearest the NTL box or the audio in pins nearest the TV - google for scart pinout and there are loads of diagrams to use)
