My rabbit wont stop thumping
liz531

Is there anything I can do to make him stop??

It doesn't bother me as I can't hear him, but he wakes my parents up and I know he's done it when my parents come down baggy eyed saying "Squirt was thumping for 4 blooooody hours last night!!!"

It's a sign of fear or danger. He can probably hear something you can't and is warning all the other rabbits.

Move him further away from the house?

Rabbits will always thump if they feel the need, there is not much you can do about it unless you know what noise is scaring him.

will there be cats or anything bothering him?
where do you keep him? do you cover him over at night?

they do it when they're not happy about something
in the wild it serves as a warning to other rabbits of a possible threat

Apart from a fear-based warning rabbits will also thump as a protest. Is he unhappy at being by himself?

My house rabbit Boo thumps at night if he hears an owl. He's done it a few times just lately, but he only thumps three to four times - not three to four hours!

Maybe your rabbit can also hear owls hooting.

What do you mean by thumping? Is that when they bang a leg on the floor?

Our neighbours have cats but they play with him during the day, the cats love him and he loves the cats. We put him in a little corner to shelter him from the wind and the rain.

I went to go buy another one as a little friend for him but they didnt have any females at the time.

My rabbits usually thump in protest when they have to go back into their hutches

Earlier this year, I had to bring one of mine (I have 3) in as they starting fighting. She lived in one of those inside cage things and my brother and I were trying to pump up my hole-riddled inflatable alien () and she thumped so hard and loudly out of protest, she cracked the bottom of the cage

I promptly stopped what I was doing

Haha! It does make me laugh though, my friend has a rabbit and it is so used to being stroked at night before she goes up to bed, it doesn't stop thumping until she goes and says night night!

You could remove the batteries or turn the settings down.

Snap.

She is a struggle to get out as well, but then doesn't want to go back in at the end of the day. Madness.

When they were all together, they'd generally go in on their own but now they're separated, we usually have to chase them For two of them, they can just wander back in but one is on the higher level of the hutch (we have 2 double hutches and one of them is seperated into 2 seperate levels) so we have to try and pick her up. She's the least confident one so it's always a job getting her back in

One of ours (Jay) get's very angry when put back in his bed & growls & thumps until he gets his tea.

Something is annoying your rabbit or frightening him.

Has he got any company? Is he de sexed?

They can make all kinds of weird noises

Yeah, it is mine still do it out of protest

As to the post above about the cats, one of my rabbits (the quieter one) hid from the kittens but Babs (one of the braver ones) was chasing them around the garden They weren't expecting that

They were lucky becase Joy, the dominant one, didn't have the chance to come out (it got dark and cold really quickly) because she really would've have chased them

you wait for the day you pick a bun up when it's not expecting it & it SCREAMS at you

it's a horrible, HORRIBLE sound

one of my older ones and two bunny kittens have done it to me in the past, really shakes you up!

I read in my rabbit book that it's not a sound you want to hear

Do you mean buying a female rabbit? I hope you get them both spayed and neutered if you get him a friend. You don't want them breeding. You'd be better trying to bond him with another bun rather than just putting another one in with him straight off as well

My rabbits tend to thump when they're upset or angry (such as hearing the buzzards in the woods next to us or even putting them away for the night even though their hutch is massive ), so try and think of what could be wrong such as 'When did the thumping get really bad?', 'Has anything changed since then?', 'Is the warm/sheltered enough?', 'Could something be coming into the garden and frightening him?'

Is there any way of your parents coming to you as he's doing it and you can have a look out the window or whatever and see what he's upto?

Phew, that was longer than I intended XD
