i have a spare tv, which i watch everyday, it is now ill
it is a toshiba model no 28W8D8A serial no 1970909 i have
had it for about 7 years, the picture is perfect, but the sound has gone funny, it sounds like a car radio in the street, all fuzzy and low in volume, does anyone know what is wrong with and is it worth fixing? thanks

It would be cheaper to get a working one off Ebay (or out of a newsagents ad) than to fix it.

Tube tellys do have nice pictures so if you don't mind the bulk of it then you can probably get a similar toshiba for very little money from ebay. But collection only unfortunately.

One solution (for now) would be to connect up a cheap stereo system to the audio outputs of whatever set-top box you are using with it. You would have to adjust the volume on the stereo rather than the TV and turn down the TV volume to nothing.

Many of the older Toshiba TV's had a slide switch on the back of the set, near the external speaker terminals, which switches off all the internal speakers except the woofer.

May be worth checking this first.

Check your surround sound settings particularly if you are not using the full speaker rig.
Get the wrong set up they can sound awfull.

At 7 years old its probably not worth it. At minimum you are probably looking at £50 to get someone to repair it and it could be more

Forgot to mention it's also possible that your TV is OK and the set-top box has gone bad.

As others mentioned it's also possible the sound settings on your TV have been messed with.

thanks for your reply's just thought i tell you, that the tv is not connected to any box, just an ariel at the back, which goes to sky box, the sky box is in another room, so just the tv itself, the problem is the tv, and no surround sound... only built in tv speakers.

That could be the problem. I have had many call outs to these over the years where the customer only was using the built in speakers but had the surround settings wrong.
Have a play with the audio menu, I am sure the problem is there.
