I just find these claims incredible, to be honest, and borderline racist. They play straight into the hands of people who claim there shouldn't be a MOBO awards in the first place.

Surely the point of these awards is to promote black music in the UK, not just to preach to the converted. You can keep it in its wee niche if you want to be overprotective and just a London meedja event, but it just arouses suspicision and resentment.

Beyond that, these comments are incredibly insulting to the city's black population, of which there is a high concentration in many areas.

Someone also has to explain to me how Cardiff or Leeds would be more multicultural and 'sexy' than Glasgow as well.

The traditional view of Glasgow is what you see in Taggart, and in many areas like some of the east end and even some of the city itself that may be the case. But you try coming to the Merchant City or the west end and tell me that it hasn't grown, and that it isn't suited to hosting these awards.

For someone to say these sort of things about Glasgow, Scotland just proves that they don't have a clue what they're talking about.

Scotland is one of the most beautiful countries in the world.

That idiot, the former MOBO panellist Paul McKenzie apparently said in The Independent on Sunday: "The real problem is getting the stars to go to Glasgow. I can understand why the MOBOs went to Glasgow - because they were having problems getting the council to foot the bill for security. But it simply doesn't work.
"Glasgow just isn't sexy and it's a very white city. Even Leeds, Cardiff or Birmingham would have made more sense. It's not a big draw for US artists. They've really struggled to get the big stars. Ask any American artist where Scotland is and they'd probably struggle."

Glasgow is a beautiful, friendly city, I've visited it many times.

It's a multi-cultural city, with many races . . . . .

What an unbelievable thing to say, like Leeds, Cardiff & B'ham are sexy Paul ?

Yea, right, I'll tell the jokes !

The fact that Americans don't know where Scotland is, isn't our problem, it's theirs !
but that's just another stereotypical view that he has of Americans.

What a jerk, man . . . .

And this is exactly what I was worried about...

It's important to note this is one commentator who's stirring things up. While there may be some others who agree, there's no evidence even a high proportion of the people currently involved in the awards share these views.

It's one arse, not an entire group of people.

Now having said all I have, I'll admit Glasgow in terms of Urban music is not the capital of the world. But isn't the point trying to reach out to people and .. well, sell more records in places where you don't already, to be blunt?

yeah i know it's only an odd few, but there's always some who love to cause debate by making those stupid comments. personally i wouldn't have a clue about what places are more 'urban' musically, although i wouldn't imagine Glasgow was one of them, but i dunno.

Used to be my concern but is the point not that it is Music of Black Origin. So in other words, it doesn't need to be sung by black people, it just has to be music inspired by those cultures?

In which case the argument about Glasgow being too white becomes even more stupid, frankly.

By "black music" they refer to Hip-hop, R&B, rap, etc. When do you see these kind of genres winning awards like the Brits?

How is it being forced down your throat if it's separated?

And as others have said, MOBO stands for music of black origin. Mind you people like you will find fault no matter what.

Totally offensive! I think this former judge needs to retract his words.

Calm down! Hardly.

He doesn't speak for the Mobos nor for anyone else - it's his personal opinion and the MOBO organisers have distanced themselves from the statement. What more do you want?

Jeez!

Glasgow is the UK's 4th largest city, and is very multi-cultural, although admittedly it's more rock/indie/dance centred (I'm from Glasgow so feel qualified to give that opinion btw).

So this is the first year they have held the MOBOs outside of London - it's my recollection that the big US stars usually shun it every year anyway!

I've travelled all over the UK and I find that comment really odd.

Maybe he's just never been to Glasgow, but I would say its one of the most multi-cultural cities in the UK.

What a plonker that man sounds. For one, when huge international acts come to the UK there tends to be 3 places they'll go to most often - the the MEN in Manchester, The O2 in London and the SECC IN GLASGOW! Surely the artists don't care where they perform as long as they get paid?

Plus, I think the "too white" comment is rather out of order.
But dang, I guess that's Blackpool out of the running for the MOBOs 2010

Why is it all urban and hip hop music? Most of which I can't stand, surely rock'n'roll and it's decendants are also "of black origin", mostly played by white people now though.

Jimi Hendrix wouldn't get a look in if he was around today, it's obviously not 'of origin'
