Today (01/10/09) is the 2nd anniversary of Tamwar Masood's first appearance on EastEnders.

After 2 years in Albert Square what do we think of Tamwar? Is he on his way to becoming a classic EE character? Or is Tamwar deadwood that should have been axed long ago? Is Tamwar now a favourite character in EE or is he just a filler?

Just incase you were not around, or have forgotten what Tamwar has been up to in the last 2 years, here's a reminder (from Wikipedia) -

TAMWAR MASOOD first appeared as a student attending a study session with his classmate, Libby Fox. It soon emerged that Tamwar was the son of Libby's mum Denise's hated boss - Zainab. Libby clearly resented Tamwar for a different reason however, and she later revealed it was because Tamwar achieved higher grades than her. The initial competitiveness between them was superseded by both pupils' mothers, Zainab and Denise, who boasted to each other about their children's academic achievements. Tamwar delighted his mother with five A grades during his AS Level exams, trumping Libby who obtained four. This lead to both Zainab and Denise declaring that Tamwar and Libby would be attempting to get a place at either Cambridge or Oxford University.

With his family facing financial hardship after the closure of the Post Office, Tamwar used his intellect to help his parents set up ''Masala Masood'', an Indian take away service run from the family home. The business was initially successful, and the family were strong, despite the departure of Tamwar's sister Shabnam to Pakistan. However, when the Health and Safety Inspectorate caught Tamwar dissecting dead animal organs in the food preparation area, Masala Masood was closed down. The problem was solved when the family decided to open up a fast food market stall, which Tamwar helped run with his friend Waseem.

Tamwar's secrecy concerned his mother. She concluded that he was gay, despite his father Masood's protestations. It transpired that Tamwar was only hiding his new hobby as a stand up comic. He shocked his mother by announcing that he wanted to pursue comedy as a career, however, he later retracted and agreed to apply to Oxford University; Zainab suspected that this was due to him wanting to be near Libby, as she was intending to apply to Oxford too. While Libby achieved the grades she needed for her place at Oxford, Tamwar failed to do so, though he did not confess this to his family. However when his brother Syed's fiancée Amira Shah urged Tamwar to confess, he pushed towards her for a kiss, but she pulled him back and shortly they both pretended that nothing had happened. Despite this, he eventually confessed to his family that he couldn't go to university.

So is ''Tambo'' EE Gold? What would you like to see him involved with in the future? Or would you just like to see him go?

What are your views?

Zainab, Masood, Shabnam and Syed are great. Tamwar is a bit of a nonentity, frankly, that has never really fitted in to the extent the others have.

The guy that plays him only has two facial expressions (gormless and very gormless) so he isn't going to win any acting awards any time soon. Whether he stays or goes I don't really care.

At least he has an on screen charisma unlike that one dimensional plank that plays Amanda's son, Tamwar has his moments.

Tamwar's a great character in his own right.

I loved the scenes with him coming clean with the family about lying to them. he's a natural actor.

To be fair, the actor who played Tamwar was only 16 when he joined EastEnders, and as with most young'uns these days, EE tries not to overload its young actors too soon incase it becomes to much for them. The actors who play Libby and Darren were treated in the same way too.

These days EE also tries to encourage its young actors to continue to study past the age of 16, doing A-levels or B-Techs, so this means they cannot be given too much screen time.

Tamwar's good, but pitifully wasted. The writers need to give him a bit more to do.

Has it really been two years since he arrived?

Lauren, Lucy, Abi, Whitney, etc... are all young, yet they had more storylines in a matter of months than he had in two years.

With all those characters there are usually large gaps between their storylines. Even Whitney since the Tony stuff has not appeared as much.

Also, Himesh Patel (who plays Tamwar) is a member of the National Youth Theatre (as he was before he joined EE). The bosses of EE have allowed Himesh to continue at the theatre to improve his acting skills etc, so again this affects the amount of screen time Tamwar has had.

His National Youth Theatre commitments end this summer however, so we should be seeing more of Tamwar from November onwards.

I think that Tamwar is a great character in EE. I particularly like how the character has developed to become more like his father in his reactions to situations, he even has the same facial expressions!

I concede though, that Tamwar hasn't had a lot of action in 2 years. Thats fair enough (for reasons explained above), but as from this autumn I want to see a lot more of Tambo in the square.

The fact that he is staying in Walford rather than going to Oxford, suggests to me that the EE bosses have something planned for the character. I think what may happen to Tamwar is -

Spoiler

It may be a long shot, but I have my suspicions!!

lol, maybe so. I just feel all the stuff with Tamwar and Amira seems to hint at something more - his longstanding crush, her urging him to come clean about university, him trying to kiss her, her 'outing' him to the family...

When the news of 'Chryed' breaks out, who's to say an upset, and vengeful Amira wouldn't throw herself at her former fiancee's brother...?

Because Syed is the bad one with his Beliefs, not Amira, that as Tamwar is no where near Amira's standards.

Not only that, i can see Tambo being there for her after the reveal

When the muslim community find out about this, i dont think any man would accept Amira - she would be tarnished in a way, even though its not Amira's fault, the women get the blame and fault out of the whole thing, and if this was a indian soap serial (this thing always happens in indian soap serials ) then i can see Tamwar stepping up and accepting her

VERY good. Brilliant comedy actor. Love him to bits (and I can't say that about many characters).
