Set up help for Amp/TV/BR/XBox
Hi
Bit of a newbie here so please be kind! I have the following kit which I am sure I must be able to get to work together better: TV - Samsung LE40A656 Amp - Onkyo TX-SR706 Sky + HD Blu Ray - Pioneer BDP 320 Xbox 360 I have a two or three problems that I think must be solvable (?!)- 1 - The HDMI hand shake on the AMP between any of the above seems to take a while and the TV will revert to a "searching for signals", "check signal" or "no signal" message while I wait patiently. This is particularly annoying when going between the Sky + and, say, Xbox on the amp. 2 - When I switch off the Blu Ray the TV sometimes reverts to terrestrial rather than staying on HDMI (through the amp) Also (and this could be really stupid!), should I connect the above in to the TV first and then through the HDMI out in to the amp...or....into the amp first and then one HDMI in to the TV (which is waht I have done). We use the amp for all sources as the sound on the TV is pants. It's a sign of getting old when technology gets the better of you!! Thanks TK |

I turn off auto-source selection on my TV, and use a multi-remote (Harmony) that always picks the right input and turns off unwanted components.
I don't have a suitable video source switch on my amp (it's too old) but even if I did I see no reason to use it unless it does some upscaling. |

My suggestion; unless you want your Amp. on when watching sky news or whatever it is best to connect Sky direct to the TV via say HDMI 1, then an optical lead from Sky to your Amp (Don't forget to assign the input). This way you only need the Amp on when you want it on & you will get 5.1 sound when being broadcast, just connecting to the Amp via HDMI will only give you stereo
![]() Now connect your BD player & Xbox to the Amp then HDMI out from the Amp. to HDMI 2 on your TV.

I am not familiar with the 706 but the 606 that I use only uses the HDMI input-outputs for video switching with no video processing.
This is handy for me because my panel (Panasonic) only has one HDMI input. I have four pieces of equipment connected by HDMI to the amp then one out to the panel and when I switch between them there is no hand shakes problems. If the 706 processes video as well that may be the cause of any hand shake problems. On the 606 you have two coax and two optical inputs for DD sound which you match to any one of the 4 HDMI inputs. The back of these amps are very complicated as are the settings and it does take awhile to set up every thing as you like it but once it all working it brilliant. Best to do setting when TOH is out. ![]() As noted above, I also use a Harmony (555) for all the switching and only use the Onkyo’s remote if I need to change sound settings other than volume that is. |
