Beyonce - will it last???
gunneruk

Well since she's based her career on looking sexy and wearing as little as possible, I doubt it, another five years maybe.

Shania Twain, Celine Dion and Whitney Houston are the only superstars who have managed to sell their voices without wearing tight fitting jeans and mini-skirts and the like

LOL. Well I'm no Beyonce fan, that's for sure, and her image does seem a bit ridiculous, but this seemed pretty funny to me. If she lasts another five years she'll have outlived 90% of her contemporaries, and will be doing a lot better than I'd predict.

I don't really see what the big deal with her clothes is. The problem is that unlike Christina Aguilera who also wears next to nothing, Beyonce is only moderately talented. Crazy in Love is one of the most over-rated singles I've heard in years.

If you really think that Shania Twain, Celine Dion and Whitney Houston are the only superstars who've achieved what you say (and I won't even get into arguing over whether Celine Dion can actually be described as a singer), then your definition of 'superstar' is one hell of a lot narrower than mine.

You'll be able to add Alex Parks to that list in a year or so, a definnate potential superstar, all based on musical talent and total comittment to the music. Its so nice to see someone in the music industry who doesnt regard their voice as a ticket to a fabulous lifestyle, but regards it as a gift to share with others.

i dont think she's the sexist black woman.
is she half-caste? (not being racist or anything, just curious)
she's got a doddgy name as well.

it seems that her assets are her arse and gud looks, as far as her voice is, its gud but nothing like whitney or agularia.

she likes to jump on the bandwagon of other rising stars like suan paulk

In her defence she's not the only one:

1. I don't think Madonna would have made it without being controversial and flaunting her body

2. Mariah Carey didn't seem to think she could have made it with just her voice so shoved her breasts in everyone's faces

3. I know its not her fault but there is a certain something which J-Ho accentuates

4. Kylie

5. Aguilera

6. Spears

7. Nearly every british female singer

It looks like sex sales.

She'll certainly have to come up with a better second solo album after her debut was basically universally panned by just about everyone.

Same with every male solo artist I can think of, if a solo artist isn't sexy to enough people, they are stuffed, no matter how good the songs are. Ugly people with musical talent either join a band or become songwriters or producers .

p.s. I can think of Bob Dylan, but you could count them on one hand, and who in the last 20 years?

Critics, what do they know. I don't know about album sales (can't imagine they were bad though), but the singles were hardly a failure, and she's walked away with lots of awards this year, including a few Grammys. I'm sure shes perfectly happy with critical failure like that .

Not just critics but the actual music buying community. Only the die hard beyonce fans have said they like it. The one's who bought it based on her first single and on the back of Destiny's Child all seem to be really disapointed with it. But its sales that count. Which means she'll be living in a bubble where she thinks its actually a really good well perceived album.

I disagree. If you write your own (good) songs, it doesn't matter what you look like, you can be successful and have a long career. I doubt that people buy Stevie Wonder, Van Morrison, Elton John, Paul Weller, Badly Drawn Boy, David Gray etc. etc. albums because of the way they look. The same goes for female artists. If you've got the talent, image is less important.

I definately agree with that and I don't think its all about if you write good songs either. I think it is also for a lot of artists if their voice alone can sell, so while I think Beyonce is okay, she obviously doesn't have the confidence that she can sell her songs without showing a lot of skin. Whereas someone like Whitney Houston did not need to do that.

I'm not complaining about Beyonce showing off her assets, I just think it means, she can never have a bad day, because she's always got to look good for the cameras and can only last as long as people think she's sexy.
