Im getting towards the end of my contract with Orange, and I have 3 phones in mind the I phone nokia n97 mini or the sony satio, the question is which is the best at keeping a signal say if you are in a poor coverage area.

Whats the call quality like of an I phone, does the lastest I phone have hspda, ie 3.5 g and how do you tell on the display when you are in a 3.5g area.

With the n97 I have read that you will eat up memory of the c drive on this phone, whats it like on the I phone is it unlimted apts or is there a limit.

On past experiance on a nokia phone you can always hear someone on your phone if you are in a noisey area , whats this like with an I phone.

And if you have a faultry battery on a I phone or it looses charge what will your phone provider do if you have insurance, as I have heard the I phone is a sealed unit. how do 02 deal with this, and whats the battery life like on the I phone say compared to an n97.

And finally can you the I phone as a modam like you can with a nokia phone if you connect it to your laptop.

Thanx

The iPhone 3GS supports 7.2 Mbit HSPDA and a 3G icon appears in the top of the screen when you have 3G but there is no way I know of to tell if you have HSPDA. You could however run speedtest to see what speed you are getting at any given time.

Call quality and signal strength on the iPhone are both good for me.

The iPhone Apps are only limited by the phones storage capacity(32GB MAX), you could easily have 100+ on there.

If the iPhone doesn't hold it's charge then Apple will replace it free of charge, you can expand your cover with AppleCare to 2 years for about 30 quid. My phone is over a year old and holds it's charge just fine and I use it heavily.

You can tether your iPhone to your laptop, O2 charge you extra to do this but other networks may provide it free of charge.

As to which phone is the best is personal preference, while I like the iPhone there are people who love the N97, give them a go in the store and make up your own mind.

The n97 will show by your signal bar as to what sort of signal you are getting. 3.5G, 3G or if it is 2G it wont have any numbers or letters.

So far I haven't had any problems with signal. On trains I have lost 3G coverage but still had 2G for calls and texts.

The n97 does seem to use up some of the C drive memory for applications but I have never run short. Mine asks me where to install the application. Also, there is an update coming out soon that will free up more of the phones memory.

Battery life for me is 1-2 days, I use the FM Transmitter/Music Player for 3 hours a day and about 30 minutes of web browsing a day.

I use my iphone on a factory floor often and as long as the volume is turned up it is fine. doesnt distort or crackle when turned up unlike the N95 I used to have!

regarding fixing it if battery goes wrong or similar, when I got mine from O2 shop the sales person said that the warranty is 1 year with apple and O2 cover the remainder of your contract term (up to the 18 or 24 month) but as said apple tend to sort it for you, there pretty good at customer care IMO.

cant comment on the N97 or sony but I will say when I had a N95 the battery was rubbish, used to be on charge EVERY night. the iphone gets 2-3 days use comfortably.
