Are music videos now more important than the actual song?

Just watching Piixie Lott on some music channel, and yeah she looks all cute and stuff and I am wondering if there was no music vidoe would he song do so well in the hit parade?

And the same can be said for multiple artists. The are now packages rather than singers where looks mean more than good songs and talent.

Well, it clearly explains Shakira's popularity.

Well to be fair, 'She Wolf' is a cute little song. I would agree that the video for it is a lot more memorable than the song itself though.

No way, anyone who howls in a song will be remembered.

In honesty I think they are more important than they should be however it depends on the artist.

it can seem like that sometimes.

case in point - ok go's "here we go again". i think it's safe to assume that that song wouldn't have been as popular as it was without the accompanying video, where the band are dancing on treadmills, which has been the subject of many youtube spoofs and was even recreated in the big brother house as a task last year.

I don't think so. A good vid is a good marketing tool though- it's more likely to make the song stick in people's minds. And personally, I do love a good mind screwey video...

I don't pay any attention to music videos myself, most of the time they are rubbish and unimaginative anyway. Merely visuals to go with the music so the song can be "watched" as well as "listened" to on various music video tv channels.

Just seen this post and er... I'm going to have to contradict my above post here. I paid attention to the Shakira - She Wolf video because although I'm not that keen on the song, I think she is ass-stounding (<see what I did there).

I don't think videos are more important than the song, but for me it can sometimes make me like the song even more. If I don't like a song but it has a good video I still wouldn't like it.

I think too much is made of the music video these days.Content over quality.

there's a reason there called MUSIC PROMOS ..... to promote the song

The song is always more important, but the video can often get more recognition which therefore increases the profile of the song. This is undoubtedly what happened with Shakira's latest effort. The video is really mesmerising for all the wrong reasons; it's so stupidly funny. Where else can you see a non-choreographed dance inside of a giant vagina?!

Well, a video will often bring attention to a song, but unless the song is good, its shortlived.

To answer the question, no. Most music videos have no relevence to what the song is about. But it's good promo.

For instance, i was flicking about on the tele and i found this blonde girl with a good voice dancing about. It was Pixie. Five months later, i am still addicted and in love with her.
