Hey, i'm having trouble setting up my VHS (yes, i do still have one and still watch it :P) to my TV.

I have freeview already build into my TV and i've re-tuned it and done what was needed to be done, but since i have retuned it the video player will no longer record off the TV. It wasn't a problem before, it used to record anything from the TV (and it was recorded from the freeview), but now it doesn't. It's always been the "DTV" that plays the freeview (it being Digital TV 'n' all) and i used to just put the VHS on L-1 (Like AVI1) and it recorded as normal. But now it doesn't

Does anyone have a solution?

Did you do a full back to out of the box condition reset on the telly? If so then you may well have changed rather more settings than just the list of TV channels.

It is not uncommon for a TV to be able to feed a signal back down the SCART lead to a recorder and it is also fairly common to be able to change exactly what it sends down the wires. Many TVs give you the option to send the signal from the tuner or from another SCART input. So if the VCR is plugged into the AV1 SCART on the TV you may have a choice of DTV or AV2 in the TV menus and AV2 may be the one now selected.

Without knowing what TV you have it is difficult to give any precise instructions to check and correct this. But it should be explained in the manual if you still have it. Or maybe trying all the menu options might reveal the setting.

When i re-tuned the TV, i followed the instructions it gave, it asked for me to confirm "that i was about to destroy all current channels" so i accepted and it re-tuned and that was it.

The TV has two scart leads, one (did) record from the TV, the other didn't.

The problem i have is that if i was just watching a Video on the VHS it plays on the TV no problem, but when i ask it to record i get just a blank screen.

My video is one of those which allows you to change the channel on the VHS to different channels, so if i was to record from just ITV i'd change the VHS channel to 3 and so on. But my TV has always recorded from AVI 1 so it's confusing.

Also, the TV has about 5 different avi's that it works on, one being DTV, the other being "EXE-1" then "EXE-2" and the last few being "PC" and "DXT".

Don't ask me what they mean because i have no idea lol.

Right. Lets get a few things cleared up.

The VHS machine has it's own built in TV tuner. So if you want to record ITV you simply select channel 3 on the VCR (not the telly) as you say and it records all by itself. You could set the VCR off recording, unplug the telly, take that to the top of the nearest skyscraper and chuck it off the roof and the VCR would be none the wiser. And it would have no effect whatsoever on the recording. Mind you it makes it a bit hard to watch it back with the telly smashed to bits

There is nothing unique about this. Every single Video Recorder made has been able to do this. So your recorder has no special ability allowing it to record a different programme to the one you are watching. It and every other VCR is designed like that. Why else did you think the aerial has to be plugged into it?

When you switch the VCR to L1 however you are recording from the SCART socket on the back of the recorder. Presumably this is the SCART to which your TV is attached. So therefore it is now recording from the TV. So maybe you had better not chuck it off the roof

So it depends on the TV being able to feed something back down the SCART lead for the VCR to record. As I say many TVs do allow this and also allow you to change what they send. In many cases this could be the TVs built in tuner, usually the digital one (DTV) or the other SCART socket on the TV. The SCARTS being EXT 1 and 2 (I suspect it's EXT - for EXTERNAL - not EXE ).

Buried somewhere in the menu system of the TV will be a setting to select this. I suspect it has been reset back to EXT-2 whereas it used to be on DTV. hence why you can no longer record any Freeview channels. This is completely separate to any button on the remote that selects DTV or EXT-2 by the way.

If I were you I would save yourself a whole world of hassle and consign the VCR to the recycle facility (no longer allowed to chuck it in the dustbin) and invest in a PVR. The great advantage of a PVR being that you can record Freeview channels completely independently of the TV. With your current set up there is no way for you to record BBC3 say and watch ITV2 at the same time. The VCR can only record either one of the analogue channels or whatever Freeview channel you are currently watching.

And many PVRs allow you to record two channels at the same time. So you could watch one channel and record another two all at the same time, assuming you can find three programmes on at the same time worth watching of course

You need to go into the TVs menu and look for an option like "AV2 Out" or similar and change it to "DTV" or "MON"
It would help us to help you if you gave us the TV make and model no.

I just did this for my neighbour.

You need to connect your TV SCART2 to the VHS AUX or A2 input.
VCR needs to be on A2 or AUX.

You can only record your integrated Freeview while the TV is on.

Then on the TV, you need to select AV2.

(Toshiba TV I think)
