hi guys
ive tried to unblock my PAYG iphone 3G 3.1 but get lost in doing so.
can someone help please? im going to Spain and want to use a Spanish PAYG sim.

Before you can unlock (not "unblock"), you first need to "Jailbreak" the iPhone.

AFAIK...

The only way to currently Jailbreak iPhone OS 3.1 is to use the Mac-only "PwnageTool", which creates a custom Jailbroken version of 3.1, for you to then update the iPhone with using iTunes.

However, as you're already running OS3.1, I think you're out of luck on the unlocking front:

OS 3.1 includes an update to the "baseband", preventing it from being unlocked. I do not think there is any way to undo it.

If you were Jailbreaking & Unlocking an iPhone running OS3.0 or 3.0.1 you'd be OK, as PwnageTool could be used to create a custom 3.1 containing the earlier unlockable 3.0/3.0.1 baseband, so you could still then later unlock it. But as you already have OS3.1, you have the newer baseband.

Yeah, impossible to unlock a stock Apple firmware updated 3.1 3G at the minute. Unless an exploit of some sort is found then you will never be able to unlock.

There is some sort of solution to jailbreaking 3.1. You can get hold of some tools that allow you to downgrade from 3.1 to 3.0 but this is only available on Mac or hackintosh PC. I don't know much about it as I am not using 3.1 myself. Still on a jailbroken 3.0 and I have jailbroken a 3.0.1 3GS as well.

I don't know if these solutions work or how risky there are even. Here is one solution http://www.benm.at/tutorials/howto-i...owngrade-os-x/. This is from the site that released the free O2 tethering carrier file which has been patched in anything above 3.0.
