Song help please!

This song was on a tape given to me years ago (long since mislaid), the person has forgotten who it was and I never knew in the first place, so this is a bit of a challenge. But I know how brilliant DS'ers are at hunting out tunes!

It was probably out mid-late 80's, sounds like a black soul-ish ballad type band/singer, possibly from the UK, if not then American and all I can remember from the lyric is something like this - 'From the mountain to the valley, from the valley to the sea......(probably second line ending in 'free')' - it's slowish and rather melancholic.

It's driving me nuts, mainly as I wish to track it down and hear it again as it has a special meaning. Many thanks in advance for anyone's ideas or help.

Is it Dionne Warwick? People Got to be free?

I found that one earlier and thought I had it, but it isn't.

Many thanks for trying and for the suggestion though, Britgirl.

Edit - I should have said that in the version I had, the singer was a man.

on second thoughts - its not 'when the river meets the sea' [john denver] that you are looking for is it??? not exactly a black soul singer from the 80's but it may well have been covered by someone else aroung that time.

It's so infuriating that I can barely remember the tune, never mind the lyrics. It's a very romantic, wistful song and quite slow, and is more of a love song than anything.

If I had to compare the band to anyone, it would perhaps be along the lines of 'The Christians' (not the religion, lol) - the Liverpool band who were around in the late 80's early 90's. Not my kind of music at all, just this one-off song.
