Another Saturday night, another round of "you was clinging onto him a bit tight", another round of indignant posts in response on DS - oh what fun we do have! Love it!!

It may be because it is so incongruous.
Gorgeous girl opens her mouth and talks like a right twazzock.
Very My Fair Lady. Gertcha.

Why don't all the DS spelling and grammar police give the lassie a break, oh to be perfectly spoken as all you moaning about her. Give it a rest.

I've read the posts on this thread but hesitated to post because the conversation has at times become very heated. However, there is one point which has not as yet been raised. It's not just a question of whether poor grammar is appropriate or acceptable on a television programme, or whether people who expect correct grammar to be used are snobs. There is also the fact that words and idiom used on television become the accepted norm. If people like Alesha, with a high public profile, are unable or unwilling to speak correctly, it becomes acceptable for people to speak that way in 'real life'.

Is it so hard to use language appropriate to the occasion? I speak differently at work from the way I speak at home - is that such a bad thing?

I've recently been interviewing for a new PA, and have been absolutely horrified at what some of the candidates seem to feel is acceptable.

This person will have to represent my company, and we have clients from around the world, so expect a high standard, and pay accordingly. 'You was,' 'we was,' 'should/could of,' are some of the delights we were offered, as well as many candidates arriving smelling of cigarettes, or chewing gum.

My point is that, if you are in certain positions in the public eye, you need to know how to behave. Alesha can speak as she chooses in private but, whilst on SCD, and receiving a salary paid for by us, she should pay attention to her grammar. I can't believe that, with all the fuss there has been on different message boards, she doesn't know that her grammar is at fault. Surely she could ask for help from someone, especially if she wants to develop a career as some sort of presenter?

She doesn't need help with her basic grammar, she needs help with the attitude that tells her it's OK to play to the yoof-street audience

I wouldn't be that surprised if it's scripted

Tonight we were treated to 'you was' and 'they was'! We've booked a table for dinner next Saturday evening, we can't stand any more Alesha on the Bruce Forsyth Show.

Dear Mrs H, surely it is Bruce Forsyth on the Alesha Show?

A prize for the best sentence written in Alesha Speak.

It's beginning to sound deliberate to me.
Either she's taking the proverbial or it is (as suggested above) scripted.

It's English.

We understand what she is saying.

English evolves constantly. Could you understand if everyone spoke Chaucerian?

All this doesn't matter. Worse things are happening in the world. You should all feel very lucky if this is all you have to worry about.

Can we close the conversation now?

Please.

Having seen last nights show, is it worthwhile pointing out that Len also used the word "was" incorrectly?

Or is this quest for perfect grammar solely aimed at Alesha?

If Bruno can use correct grammer, then I think we should expect at least the same from Alesha. She has a formal role and is a role model. Kids need to know what is correct because there's a high probability that one day they will be interviewed by someone from the grammer police.

You was being a bit unfair in your post, Quizmike. We wasn't totally understanding what she were saying.

I'm past being concerned about how Alesha speaks, but I do believe she needs to think about what she says.

Part of the justification for her actually being taken on as a judge was that she could empathise with the celebs, be encouraging, etc, because she has been there herself.

Last night she was very personal and insulting to several of the competitors so what happened to the sympathetic and supportive role?

I like Alesha on the panel. A big improvement on Arlene Phillips. I don't see anything wrong with the way Alesha speaks.

All I can say is that if Alesha reads these posts I'd bet she's aving right a larf. Clearly, she's not going to change because of the comments made by some mean spirited types.

LOL at her "bum action" comment

Totally agree with you.. if she is reading these posts then maybe it's her way of sticking two fingers up to those mean spirited types.... LOL

The way Alesha talks is appalling. It wouldn't matter if she made the odd slip-up - but if she were marked on a scale (1 low - 10 high) she would get the perfect 10. She could give Eliza Doolittle and the cast of Eastenders a run for their money or as they say in "Carmen Jones" "beat aaaaat that rivvum on a drum".

It does matter - it matters a lot. Ms Dixon is a presenter on the BBC and the BBC is funded by our licence fee. So in effect we pay her salary. I agree with Mrs Harry. The way Alesha speaks in her private life is her own business but when she doing her job on SCD she is a role-model and should speak half-decent English. I would hate it if my son or daughter picked up guttersnipe English from her thinking it was the norm.

God forbid Alesha ever let slip a swear word with the way you're all banging on about how she speaks already ...

Leave her alone.
