I can, i understand what she means and it doesn't bother me in the least

Same here. I have no problems at all.

Alesha's a lovely girl who just happens to speak "London English" and not the Queen's English. Cannot believe this is still being debated on here !

Because not speaking "as if they have just left Eton" is no reason to complain

She does not talk "London English" - she talks like an East End Gangster's Moll - which she does for effect. I am sorry but I can't take the woman seriously - she is a joke.

I do wonder at the pomposity of those who speak less than perfect English adopting a self righteous position when it comes to Alesha.

God forbid that I should see the day when my respect for another is based on their ability to express themselves without error.

I have a friend whose grammar is hardly faultless. Do I take him seriously? I do indeed - the man is a mathematical genius and anyone fails to respect him based on his mastery of English (or lack of it) is quite clearly a snob with little to be snobbish about; (or should that be 'with little about which to be snobbish?)

Some people like the way Alesha talks.

Some people dislike the way Alesha talks.

Some people don't care either way.

End of thread.

I don't know whether it's because it's been brought to my attention with this thread so I'm noticing it more, but Alesha seems to be saying "you was..." an awful lot lately!

I do find it off-putting, Maybe that's my problem though and not hers.

But your own ability with written English is open to correction as you admitted here -

Despite your shortcomings I understood the point you were making. I took you seriously and certainly didn't regard you as a joke.

Is it really so difficult to allow Alesha the same latitude.

Have you ever been to London or met anyone from there?

Exactly.

Alesha's "London English" is not even at the extent of what it has become with the teenage generation aka mine. If a non-londoner came up to the teenage generation in London it is likely that they would not understand a word they are saying due the heavy influence of slang and extra words. So to be honest, compared to the new wave of the way Londoners speak, Alesha is really not as bad as it could be.

Personally, she does annoy me with her little grammatical errors sometimes, but as I am part of a generation whose speech is heavily influenced by slang I don't take too much notice.

Every time she says it I laugh out loud, knowing that the grammar police are having a touch of the 'Hyacinth Buckets!'

Oh dear! What does she think of Alesha?

btw is this an inappropriate thread to say mwaaah, mwaaah; I'd hate to be accused of inadequate mastery of my mother tongue.

I'd say lol to that but it's a term invented post 1925 so it's probably frowned upon.

So I'll say...Ignazio I found your comment most amusing.

I am Londoner, a born, bred, educated, employed resident of London. I am unacquainted with her manner of speaking in my everyday life in North, West, Central and South London. It is a fallacy to describe her deliquent way of speaking as "London English".

The only person I have heard speak like her is Lauren Alesha Masheka Tanesha Felicia Jane Cooper . It is a travesty that the BBC now regard the delinquent speech of gutter mannerisms something they can litter prime time viewing with and not as a parody of Broken Britain but as an actual role model for impressionable youth.

Also, her need to express herself using Yardie gangsta slang is unfortunate, debasing and shocking. We do not need that nasty and pervasive lifestyle spread any further in to London life. Leave that sort of language to drug dealing, knife toting crime drama and NOT in the at-one-time-classy, formerly-rather-good, SCD.

Can I just say as a born and bred Londoner that your statement there is extremely condescending.

It is funny, I experience a completely different London to you. A London where slang is used on a more extreme level than Alesha uses and will ever use. She sometimes gets some grammar wrong and might use innit but does that make her a bad person?

As a student in London, many of my friends- educated, intelligent A* friends, use slang on a level that people haven't heard. They don't go around stabbing people or dealing drugs- they are people who work hard and respect those around them. So sorry- she doesn't use "Yardie gangsta slang" in fact her manner of speaking is no where near it. Perhaps you shouldn't listen to stereotypes.

I think I've heard it all now!

Alesha how dare you debase yourself by saying 'we was' instead of 'we were?'

Do you not realise that your inadequate English is leading the impressionable youth of Britain into a nasty and pervasive lifestyle?

And there you were thinking you're nought but a judge on SCD.

Shame on your girl.

As many have observed, she is a reasonably intelligent and highly ambitious woman, who must be capable of making an effort to get basic verbs in order. The family members (Nan and Mum)seemed on ITT two years ago to speak reasonably correct English. All of which leads me to suspect that the 'gangsta' English she trots out is a choice, sadly condoned by the BBC in refusing to address the issue.”

I was trying to give Alesha the benefit of the doubt If she is deliberately choosing to speak this way then who exactly is she trying to impress? I'm pretty sure the majority of SCD viewers aren't 'Gangsta' and aren't particularly impressed by what they see as poor grammar.

I brought the regional accents into it because, for all I know, they may speak like this where she comes from. If so, it would be a lot more forgivable IMO. However if her Mum and Gran don't talk like that ... you have to wonder if she's doing it to be 'hip and trendy' (to coin a phrase) If so, it seems to be back firing big style and she should re-assess her grammar (IMO).

Be interesting to know.

Plus, how many of you complaining actually come from London?”

My Grandmother came from London but spoke quite 'posh'!

And you're absolutely correct in your assertion that no one who speaks like e.g. Stephen Fry or Rupert Everett gets any stick for their accents!!

Queen's English? Do you possibly mean Standard English? Personally I think of the "Bromley Burr" as "London English". Alicia seems to speak in "Broken English" as its derivation seems to be from patois or pidgin english.
